? If you bought the album in 1984 when it came out, how would you or anyone at the time know it was or would be the most popular album. At that time it was 1999 not Purple Rain.

If your friend does it that way, then he is becoming a fan of these groups AFTER they have made it big. So in other words, somebody becoming a new Prince fan, I can see them applying this concept because there is so much to choose from.

But if somebody is your favorite artists, most likely you will have their top album. Now it may not be your FAVORITE album but it most likely will be in your collection.

Unless it's a freak career where some artists have super successful albums in their early career, then a lull, then a comeback. Like somebody not having 5 by Lenny Kravitz, but have Mama Said.

I only have the DVD of the film, but not the actual physical copy of the album (although I've downloaded it anyway). But that's mainly because I've only been a fan for a few years.

I bought the CD and the movie, so... .

The cynical part of me wants to say your friend is kind of a music snob who intentionally snubs anything commerically popular.

Having said that - Purple Rain really isn't Prince's best work to me, so ....

I bought the vinyl album when it came out.

Stole the cd a couple years afterwards.

Bought the 25th anniversary dvd.

The album is still in decent condition.

The cd is now see through

The dvd is in excellent condition.

My mom doesnt own Purple Rain

She doesn't own any other Prince album for that matter...

I do have it. But I don't think it's necessary to have an artist's top album. The thing should be implanted on your synapses coz after playing it so much you've lent it out and never got it back.
