I don't doubt that "Raspberry Beret" draws inspiration from the same barn sequence intended for Purple Rain, but as the overall feel of the projects go, Purple Rain comes off as a wildly passionate play-by-play of a young man's present station in life -- laments and wishes about the world immediately around him, his complex personal relationships, etc.

ATWIAD, on the other hand, strikes me more as a sordid journey of recollections, daydreams and ruminations, all written somewhat outside of a particular place and time. I think "Raspberry Beret," essentially a reconstructed memory, fits perfectly here. I wouldn't move it.

No, I don't think that Rasberry Beret would've been better on the Purple Rain album. It just don't fit, I don't think. Around The World In A Day is in so many ways is similar to Purple Rain but, it's also very different. This is why I don't think it fit because of that. I do think that the animation of that part in the video was inspired from the deleted barn scene from the Purple Rain film.

It fit PERFECTLY on Around the World in a Day. From the vibe right down to the arrangement. If anything, Take me with u did not fit on Purple Rain. One of the worst "duets" to ever get cut loose from an album. Filler at best.

Yeah, but the movie didn't have castles in it either even if Darling Nikki mentions Nikki living in a castle.

AND who was Nikki anyway?! No Nikki in the movie!

"Nikki" is the girl that wants him - Apollonia.

... not sure if there's too much in the movie that would support that interpretation.

"Darling Nikki" is just a lewd song that the Kid performs on stage in order to provocate the audience as well as Apollonia that's also in the audience. It's supposed to convey how the Kid is confused and doesn't know what he wants, so he resorts to macho antics (well, "macho" by Prince's standards). If anything, he deliberately seems to want to offend Apollonia with the performance. The song starts out by depicting a fantasy scenario involving another woman, but towards the end of the performance he seems to direct the lyrics to Apollonia instead. That's however, suggested mostly by the camera work and editing.

No. It seems all the songs on Purple Rain have a raw feel to them. Perfect for a musical drama. I like Raspberry Beret on ATWIAD. It's right were it belongs with pop life.

Yes. I think it WOULD have been a better song for the 'take me with u' scene. Also electric intercourse would of been better for the 'beautiful ones' scene and 'irresistable bitch' would have been better for the 'darling Nikki' scene. definately. nod

Are you trying to turn Purple Rain into an episode of Glee?

Also 17 days would have been better for the when doves cry scene

No, 17 Days would not have been better for When Doves Cry because it would not had been a hit. Remember, When Doves Cry was the first major hit prior to the movie coming out. Like myself, it wet many peoples appetites to come out to see the movie. Please leave The Beautiful Ones alone to. That song is perfect where it's at. I agree that Irresistible Bitch would've been a better song than Darling Nikki. How many people drive around listening to this song. It's the type of song that you listen to once and that's all you need, but Irresistible Bitch is much more interesting.

U make some good points but i have to say i still disagree.

just because a song was a commercial success, does not mean that an unreleased song would not have fit in better and been more appropriate.

My remake of Purple rain would go like this..

Lets go Crazy- leave as is

Beautiful Ones- change to electric Intercourse-E. Intercourse is more penetrating than TBO (TBO didn't fit in2 P's character. His way was supposed to be the opposite of boastful, brash Morris so E. intercourse's mellow, confused pining would have been better)

Take me with U- change to raspberry beret

When Doves Cry-Changed to 17 Days (Should have had P singing this by himseld in 1st ave, after everyone has left him or not turned up 4 rehearsals. Just after billy says "what wud u do in my position"... cut 2 P about 2hrs later, picks up his guitar, plays a backing track and sings 17 days as images of him and Apples and his nightmares of Morris & apples sleeping 2gether flash by) nod

Computer Blue- Changed to Posessed (instead of it merely playing in the background) I always thought that it would be a more fitting song to be talking about when billy says "the kid's in rare form tonight" P should be doing some crazy JB moves with black make-up, bongo drums and shit

Darling Nikki.. defibnately change to Irrisistable Bitch. Just to rub it in more a woman dressed like Apples shud be on the stage gyrating with P

Leave the rest of the songs as is except for Baby Im a star which should of been changed to Erotic City as the grand finale... yeah neutral

The CLUB erupts in CRIES! Prince hits
the stage, launches into "G-spot," a
fast, high-spirited funk tune that gets
the crowd hopping. Vanity watches as
Prince whips the crowd into a frenzy.
Morris listens with a complacent grin on
his face, his eyes searching out various
members of The Time who are scattered
through-out the club. When he connects
with one of them he makes a series of
absurd faces which sends them into
hysterics. For Prince is playing music
that The Time is noted for, and, as far
as Morris is concerned, performs better.
Not everyone in the club is dancing, or
paying attention, and this does not
escape his notice.

Suddenly "G-Spot" comes to a rousing
end. The CROWD cheers wildly. Prince
moves quickly to the piano and launches
into "Electric Intercourse," a love
ballad which, as it progresses, becomes
a personal statement for Vanity and
Prince himself.

I feel some kind of love 4 U
I don't know your name
This is the kind of love that takes 2
I want U and I'm not ashamed

Cuz baby, U shock my wild
With a sexual electricity extraordinaire
Come and take advantage and undress me
I don't even know U, I don't even care

I feel some kind of sexual courage
Tell me do U feel it 2?
Our bodies wanna be 2gether
Girl, I wanna be with U

Electric is my body, baby
I'll shock U with my lips
Darling, don't U know
Your Technicolor climax is at my fingertips?
Hear me, baby

Electric intercourse, electric intercourse

Don't U wanna?
Electric intercourse, electric intercourse
Don't U wanna make love, sweet love, my love?

She listens intently, her eyes fastened
on him. The words have a profound
effect on her -- and the audience.
Without being consciously aware of it,
they're moving closer to the stage,
searching for their personal fix. Prince
surrenders himself to the music totally,
releasing from himself all that is
hurtful -- releasing the sincerity and
truthfulness that escapes him in his
daily life. We are entering realm
where life and music are inextricably
bound, and the impact on the performer
and listener is profound.

He's directing his music toward her, and
she receives it gratefully, almost
anxiously. It fills a void in her, hewn
by a life of meaningless promises. He
searches her face with his magnificent
eyes, and ends the song with a
heartrending cry which connects with the
souls of all present. Everyone is
paying attention now.

Electric is my body, baby
I'll shock U with my lips (Yes I will)

vigorously, wipes the tears from her

1) Nikki is in reference to Vanity's character's original name.

2) Nah, RB would not have worked on PR because it's a bit too bright and sunny on a mostly dark album. TMWU's bright disposition is what makes it stand out on the PR album. Adding another one would result in diminishing the power of TMWU which is a good song.

3) There is much in the life of the characters of the movie we don't see. No, there is no castle. It's a metaphor, doi. He's saying she brought him into her twisted sexual world and left after using him for all he had (physically) topping it off with a note saying "Thanks, see ya next time". To her, it was no big deal - she had contracts ready to sign, so to speak. It was easy for her. For him, it turned him completely out and the rug was pulled from under him when he awoke to her being gone, having shared seemingly none of the intense feelings he felt.

We would've had to have heard the version he demoed to answer that. I think Purple Rain was the first time he had time and money on his side to work with. I'm sure he wrote some of these songs at the time with the debate whether he'd sing them or he'd save it for someone else to sing. He did put that one away for a couple of years... but finished with vocals or unfinished instrumental, that's the question.

Raspberry Beret was written in 1983 so it quite possible could have been written for Purple Rain. Prince could've easily reworked it for ATWIAD. I'm sure the original version from 1983 had that 1999/PR flavor to it whereas the released version fit the psychedelic mode of ATWIAD.

I would love to hear the original 82 version of Raspberry Beret and the 81 version of Baby, I'm A Star biggrin However, I do not agree that the song would fit on Purple Rain at all. It's too childish for something as serious as Purple Rain. Maybe Under the Cherry Moon, but that's all.

Take Me With U is the only happy-go-lucky song that deserves to be on Purple Rain.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!
