Remember being in art class in 83 hearing Little Red Corvette... Also remember Contoversy... Really fell in love though in Finland in 1988 during the Lovesexy tour... I had a ticket, he cancelled my show. I watched and recorded the broadcast from Dortmund and i still have the VHS. It became my fav concert of all time, have watched it 100 times at least.. Over the last 20 odd years... That was when i started collecting Prince music and have seen him more than 10 times since then in 3 different continents. Purple Rain song got me when I was just a baby, that song touched me in ways I still can't explain. And the movie kept me smiling. Then I became hardcore during Emancipation, and officially hooked during Musicology. I'm constantly impressed by his music, how gorgeous he continues to be, And how I'm always reading about, talking about, listening to, or watching P. Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Grew up listening as a kid via exposure from my siblings (primarily my older brother). I still remember being scared, as a kid, of the scream at the end of "Thieves in the Temple" (and, incidentally, "Thriller").
First album I owned was a tape of Diamonds and Pearls I stole from my brother. He beat my ass. Then I bought D&P, Purple Rain, and 1999 on cassette from my local store. All I wanted was a dual tape deck for my birthday that year (1991) and when I got it, I would play my little Prince tapes constantly, even to fall asleep.
Been hooked ever since.

I've said this story many times on here but short version, I saw Prince on TV when I was 4 in 1983 for LRC and 1999. I dug what I heard but it wasn't until WDC came out that I became a fan. I wanted to see Purple Rain but Mom gave me a quick "No" so I didn't ask for Purple Rain the album. 2 years later, Mom eased up and got me Parade. By 1991, I had all of Prince's albums/cassettes/CD's from Purple Rain to Graffiti Bridge. I was more into Michael Jackson at the time and late in 91, Dangerous and Prince's D&P came out around the same time. When I heard "Black or White" for the first time, I was not excited about it and I noticed that I was more interested in D&P than Dangerous and it was then that I knew I turned a new corner and I became a die-hard Prince fan which I still remain. Still an MJ fan but it went down dramatically once Prince became #1 for me.
Through the ups and downs, I STILL LOVE being a Prince fan I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Great story. Makes me wonder if I'm, God forbid, 'brainwashing' my son. I play music every morning while we get ready and he dances around to it. Mostly I play Prince, but some TTD, Stevie, MJ, dance mixes, etc. He's only 15 months old but he just lights up, shaking his little butt and arms. I litterally grew up listening to him. From the womb when my brother (R.I.P.) had a walkman and put the headphones on my mother's stomach.
According to legend, I started to react.
I just was always into the guy from day 1. He was like a superhero to me.
Then, finding out we shared the same birthday, and last name.
I just don't remember not being a Prince fan. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

well, that's quite a story. my brother was a fan in the eighties. I remember he had a couple of 12" singles (during the SOTT/Lovesexy era). I was ten at the time. didn't paid too much attention to it. I was more into Michael Jackson back then (it was the Bad era) and even Elvis Presley (thanks to my father for the last one). Years later my brother died in a car accident (1995) (I was almost 18). after a period of grieve I wanted to go back to his music interests, because I remembered some songs he used to play for me. as a tribute and to remember my brother, I wanted to recollect some of the songs he used to like, songs I remembered that he played for me when I was little. some of these songs were Prince songs. so in 1998 I started to collect some Prince albums, obvisiously the most popular ones first (Purple rain, SOTT, 1999). That year he released a new album (New power soul) which I bought immediately. I thought back then (stupid I know) that if I played the new Prince songs, that somewhere my brother could hear it too. I thought he would be interested in the new songs Prince has released after his death. In the same year, I bought crystal ball en saw my first concert in Ghent (new power soul festival tour). I believed my brother was there with me. my interest in Prince's music grew, and before I knew it, I had all of his official albums, in 2001 I signed in to the NPGMC because I wanted to have everything he released. and now, years later, I saw him 4 times live, have all of his released music, a couple of bootlegs, some concerts on dvd and I can say I'm a huge fan. I could tell the same story about Madonna by the way. [Edited 2/25/11 0:53am] [Edited 2/25/11 0:56am]

Like many, it was when Purple Rain came out. I was 13 & a couple people thought I looked like some of the Prince protegees so I listened to the music/ videos and I became hooked. I could relate to his troubled family life in the film and music as his expression. I searched for his earlier stuff and continued to follow his career throughout the yrs. I had never seen a man so in touch with his feminine side and I loved his image. I esp loved the ethereal, spiritual songs that he created. His music and artistry was in a class by itself & was a form of rebellion and freedom for me in a way; I was such a proper, introverted girl. Going to the Lovesexy Tour was a highlight of my senior year in HS. Music was my self-expression growing up and I later went to a very well-known modern music college. Have u had your + sign today?

Get Off <3 my first love.
I was watching a polish verison of "So You Think You Can Dance", and girl danced to "Kiss". Then, i have looked for Kiss on YouTube, bu i haven't find it. Guys, it was 2005 and it was nothing on YT. Five years later, at 28th February 2010 (yeah, anniversary is tomorrow!) I was reading in magazine about Ke$ha (), and i read that Ke$ha sneaked into Prince's house. It reminded me about Kiss and i found it on YT, and fell in love ! So evil girl, if one of us has a date,

It all started with Pop Life in 2009! I remember being on AOL browsing through videos about "The King of Pop" (AT the time, I was HOOKED on MJ, still am, but not as I am with Prince..lol) and I accidentally clicked the video (The Live Performance in 2001, "One..Nite Alone" and it was SLAMMING! The way he screamed at the beginning much like he does in DMSR and Superfunkycalifraisexy, it motivated me to dig deeper into his music. I watched Ellen Degeneres the next day and there (By total surprise!) he was performing Crimson & Clover! I really digged that performance; so I looked him up on youtube, and remembered this was the same guy who apparently does not want his music or music videos to be shared. Hahaha, BUT I end up finding the audio for the song on Youtube, I RAPED the replay button. Haha, The song had then became apart of me. I shared the video on my Facebook Page, and my friend (who is like the BIGGEST Prince fan), I ever met said: "Jesse , Prince played all the instruments on that song, and he wrote it! He is known as the artist who writes, composes, and produces ALL of his work, I know you are a BIG MJ fan but once you hear Prince, he takes it on new different levels, I can recommend you some songs if you wish..(Something on that note) lol" then I was like DANG! This guy is incredible! Hahaha, then came HOUSEQUAKE, and "If I Was Your Girlfriend". SOTT is really the album that made me realize Prince was one of a kind, and one of the best musicians and artists the world has ever come across! Ever since then I've been hooked! SO I got into Prince in a random AOL search intended for Michael Jackson and a scream that made me wonder what is this guy really about? lol TILL this day, I have been hooked on his jams, and I can't wait to see him in Carolina in a few days! I am PUMPED! he is by far one of my biggest inspirations and in the TOP 3! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

I grew up in Asia...I had heard of Prince but I didn't really become a huge fan until I came to America. Well to be honest Prince's music was never around in my country and most of people in my country don't even know about award shows like Grammys or BET....haha Well come to think of it, maybe some of older people who were alive during 80's in my country might know Prince
I don't think there's one particular moment of becoming a huge fan I can recall. I started watching his videos on youtube and listening to his music more and more, and before I knew it, I was a huge fan of his
The CD I bought after I came to America, EMANCIPATION, definitely taught me a lot about Prince though. Before that album I only knew songs like Kiss or Purple Rain...Just a few famous ones and "Planet Earth" album. But after I bought EMANCIPATION album online, I started collecting his CDs more and more...
"Soul Sanctuary", "The Love We Make", "Let's Have A Baby", "Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/Wife"....all 3 CDs in Emancipation album are indescribably beautiful. It feels like I'm dreaming when I listen to this album......
I JUST LOVE PRINCE SO MUCH^^ I'm so greatful I got to fall in love with his music!!!
P.S. My 12 year old sister has been in this country for 4 years and she's in love with Justin Bieber.....My mission is to make her Prince fan one day lol....but maybe I'll wait until she gets a little older ^^;;

Always been a huge MJ fan, so I was always aware of Prince and thought he was "cool", but caught on a little later in my childhood days. Remember loving the "Batdance" video, and watching "Grafitti Bridge" every time it came on HBO or cinemax. Also remember stayin up "all night" (til about 12) watching "Purple Rain" for the first time with my best friend. "Under the Cherry Moon" was the first black & white film I watched that kept my attention all the way through lol. Didn't start to really get into his music until about '98. Spent all my allowance buying his albums, and discovering that every album took me to different places, and my mind was kinda blown away by that.

After recording it of TV, and watching it back in the early 90s, it was Jack Nicholson dancing to Partyman and Trust in Batman that first got my interest. I borrowed the soundtrack on cassette (!), played it over and over and wasn't even aware it was Prince at the time. Then a friend of mine used to play Love Symbol and D&P back to back, then he bought the Exodus album and we were like HELL YEEESSS!!! I started getting whatever albums/singles I could find after that.
My appreciation for his music has grown since, but I will keep playing the whole Gett Off maxi single to get motivated at work, that and the Gold album. This is what it's like in the dream factory...

Purple Rain.. I was 9 years old. My BFF and I would pretend we were in the videos and would lap dance our house chairs.....I remember being too young to go see the tour (our older brothers and sisters got to go) and I had dreams about Prince. And like someone else said, the beginning of "When Doves Cry" pretty much epitamizes my entering Prince's world.
