Best solo on a Prince record that wasn't played by Prince There are some records were Prince's backup have managed to distinguish themselves over the years. My personal fav will always be Dez Dickerson's guitar solo on Little Red Corvette. It is hard to find a more relevant or iconic contribution to one of the most important Prince records in his mind boggling career. LRC is easily one of the greatest rock records of all time and you have to give Dez his props for his part in it.
Dr. Fink's synth solo on Head is right behind it though. Every time I hear it, it kicks my ass - and I have been playing it since it was released 31 years ago.
Everything else falls behind these 2 in my opinion. What you got? |

That's because they didn't really happen all that often, in general.
Dez on Little Red Corvette
Levi on Sexy MF
Miko on We Can Funk 86
Fink on Head, Baby I'm A Star
Wendy on Christopher Tracy's Parade
Lisa on Data Bank
Michael B on Shhh!
Those are off the top of my head and all are classic solos. |

Little Red Corvette is definitely the top of the heap, but I'd also like to nominate Eric Leeds for Hot Thing - it just wouldn't be the same song without Eric. PRINCE: the only man who could wear high heels and makeup and STILL steal your woman! |

Rosie on "Gett Off". Without her, it would be a much weaker record. . |

Eric Leeds sax solos on the Family & Madhouse music:brb gotta pull up a few
the Revolution on Power Fantastic... Eric Leeds on Flute Lisa on Piano etc
Lisa played a lot of piano/synth/orchastra chords throught the 1999-Dream Factory music, but don't know who is who |

for my money, Dez' Little Red Corvette solo, nothing even comes close, a perfect song with a perfect solo, perfect example of how music doesn't have to be complex to be great. The lead guitar work on the song througout is also stellar, the fills etc.., If there is a better pop song, you'll have to show me. |

This is live, not on a record per se, but Miko's guitar solo on "Do Me Baby" from Tokyo 1990. I still think Miko played the closest to Prince's sound. "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham |

I have to go with Fink on Head.
I think this is the one solo out of all the above mentioned that Prince couldn't have cut himself - apart from the horns and woodwind stuff of course.

Did Sonny T. play the bass on Rock & Roll is Alive? It shows him on the love41another video but I don't know if it was actually him.

Little Red Corvette by Dez Dickerson and Sexy MF by Levi Seacer spring to mind.
There's also some nice piano stuff at the end of "Sex In The Summer" by Ricky Peterson. It's technically more advanced than what I've heard Prince play on the piano himself.
The winner is probably Dez with LRC.

I'll go with Eric's solo on the original (unreleased) version of "Crucial".
Fink on "Head" is up there, too. |
