Should Prince play "Gold" live ever again ? (12 stills from Lopez' "Laydown" - Prince dressed in Gold)

Wouldn't it be appropriate to hear Prince play the song "Gold" again (- aka. the "Purple Rain" song of the 1990s?!)

biggrin

I agree. Too many regular folks are unaware of this gem of a song.

Yes he should ditch PR for a few years and play Gold and other trinkets like Cybersingle and Habibi.

To me this is not one his better songs, but it's a good song, and I think he should play it live. I would like Prince to play fewer of his hits and obvious classics and surprise us more.

Yeah - I agree. I mean, he started out wearing the ugly gold when he did Laydown, but then for the interview he changed into that rockin' red suit! Why oh why did he change back into that ugly gold outfit for his next set??

Anyways...Gold is a good song. He certainly could throw it in the mix during his 21 nights in LA. It's not going to be one of his better known songs to throse who aren't die-hard fans, but they don't know Dreamer or Laydown either.

Nope. Gold is a pretty weak number. The lyrics are mostly trite sentimentatlity and the keyboard parts are pretty awful. It was a weak attempt at creating a new Purple Rain, and like much of that album, best left in his closet.

It's my guilty pleasure. When I "study" it, it strikes me as immensly cheesy.

But when I play it I rock out like a little kid airguitaring in front of the mirror. lol

^ wow let me disagree with you,

The Gold Experience is just a wonderful album, so many classic: funk, rock, pop & soul biggrin

Easily Prince's best of the 1990s, and also a Prince top 10 of best albums.

You don't like this fine piece of music, OK cool with me - we can't agree on everything here, I just don't understand this view, cuz I love TGE dearly....... wink

I've been wishing he would dust that song off for ages now. Not saying that it should

replace Purple Rain since so many people seem to go nuts for that, still. But if he's

gonna do a few encores, "Gold" would be a perfect song to close the original set, or

do as an encore.

Especially since he's enjoying his guitar so much these days, he could let it rip long

and hard on the "Gold" solo.

I guess there's every such a slight glimmer of hope now that he's started to play

"Endorphinmachine" again (be it only twice now).

As for the comment about the keyboard parts in gold being lame, I'm sure that if he

would play the song today he would change it up a bit and strip it down some more.

A lot of times when he decides to add a more obscure song to his setlist for a while,

he does a very nice new arrangement. Like "something in the water" or the new and

quite spectacular "i could never take the place of your man". the problem is that he

only performs them once or twice when they are such beauties.

Time for another tour once W2A is over. Stripped down, re-arranged or just very,

very obscure stuff. Skelleton band, Prince, John B, Renato and Rhonda.

Really? eek I remember this song being played quite a few times on music video channels (although the last time was probably 8-9 years ago), and I'm 16.

He should never play Laydown again. It's another one of those "Prince trying to be cool" songs.

eh.

love the song and would love to hear it live. but the only reason it exists is to stand in for "Purple Rain" because he was adamant, however briefly, about not doing his well-known hits at the time. if he were to put it back in the setlist, it would probably be in a stripped-down acoustic version (think "Welcome 2 The Dawn"). which would be a very nice thing to witness. but kind of defeats the point.
