How do you listen to Prince? What's your audio setup like?... How have you used audio technology to elicit the best possible sound you can get when listening to Purple music?
We've come aways since boom boxes and cassette tapes, no?
I recently invested in a sound card and some Bose speakers and it's never been better for me. I'm sure compared to some of you audiophiles, that's just a drop in the bucket.

a really good hi fi system is usually rather showing tha flaws of a WRONG mastered records, as the engineers all the way since they knew how to use a multiband compressor have been focusing more on making music sound loud, and "clear" on a car radio, rather than actually making the music sound good on great speaker systems. Most releases are masterede for listening by average Joe, and not the rich elite, or the desperate audiophiles.
Great audio systems would show problems occuring when clipping, mp3 compression, "P's, and F,s pop and shh sounds"
A really bad audio system will hide much of this, but also not show the greatness of the sound. So sometimes a good budget audio system, or an ok hi fi system is the best imo. But it all depends on how an album is mastered, and you'll find it to sound different on 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s prince. And everything in between. I will get back on this post later. I want to test some of this

It's a pity that you paid $200 of that for the name, nice headphones though, but not worth even half of what you paid.

I just use a nice seperates hi-fi. Amp, cd player and quality speakers, cable and interconnects. I hardly ever play Prince cd's now, A- because i would rather listen to live stuff, and B- because i listen via the laptop. Still play cd's by other artists though, and when the rare mood takes me to listen to a Prince album.

Those Dre headphones are very nice, and they look very nice too, but most of the $ you would pay for them are going on Dr Dre's name, marketing etc.

Yeah I've seen them. I believe those are the ones Lady Gaga is crazy about also. She's also worn them in one of her videos. Those Dre headphones do sound awfully good. I can't dish out that kind of smack though. I have one of the older pair of Bose earbuds that I listen with occasionally. Mostly just listen with my Skullcandy earbuds now on my iPod in mp3.

First I make a O+> symbol out of all the cd cases--with the arrow pointing towards Paisley Park--then I sit in the circle with a tamboraca, press play on the Graffiti Bridge dvd (muted), read my favorite passages of Jehovah obliterating homosexuals (New World Trans) as the funk I'm never even quite sure if I'm ready for/can handle fills my purple room.
No hard feelings. | |

I use a set of M-Audio studio monitor speakers and play the music through my Mac. Everything is in 320kpbs MP3 or FLAC. I used to play through a THX surround system with a big subwoofer but I eventually got sick of all that bass in an apartment.

I have studio monitors (Yamaha MSP10s) that reveal the shortcomings in the sound quality really well, so they're hardly the optimal choice for listening to the 80s bootlegs.
Prince is the type of stuff that I usually listen to on headphones during the night though.

At home I have a pair of Bowers and Wilkins 685 speakers connected to a simple Onkyo reciever. I have everything up to the Batman soundtrack on vinyl, which I play from my Audio Technica AT-PL120 turntable. Everything else I have on CD or MP3. When I'm on the go I listen to Prince from my iPod with my Shure E530 earphones =).

I listen to Prince on an average stereo (none of that expensive hi-fi stuff that apparently shows the faults of the recording more clearly) , and headphones on the computer.

Not seen: Magnepan SMG-a's paired with Yamaha subwoofer.
Vast majority of my music is ABR 320kbps MP3 controlled by a Sonos ZP 90, run through a Benchmark DAC1 to the Yaquin tube preamp and Emotiva amp, then to the Magnepan speakers. I also have some 24bit 96/192k flac albums that I run through a Popcorn Hour A-200. [Edited 2/21/11 6:09am]
