The fact that Media TakeOut even made it about race, is fucking stupid.
And the fact that people have actually spent page after page of this thread, going along with that shit and arguing about race, is even more stupid.
And when it's not that, it's a bunch of adults making fun of someone's looks...
Seriously now?
This shit should be locked. "I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

I don't get it, You know by know what will or can happen in threads like this. Why upset your world by even clicking on the link? And put expectations on people. Some thread like this is just fun banter, there was seriously NO arguing going on in here...

Purplenuts, this is not specifically directed at you personally, but I think some are getting confused as to what Hatrina may have meant when she said Sheila E has always been "considered" a "sista" within the black community; meaning Sheila E has always been a part of the Black community in the way of her interest/respect for our social concerns, as well as her having many Black American/Black non-American friends and associates. She was present at the Black State of the Union conference, the year Prince did a benefit concert for the SOBU, after the conference, sitting in the audience taking notes, and obviously had an interest in the concerns/opinions/ideas expressed during that conference in regards to the Black community, as a whole. Tavis stated during the opening of that conference, that Prince himself, has always had a vested interest in the social/economic concerns within the Black community.
From what I understand Sheila E's mother is of Creole heritage (black/french), so if Sheila chooses to identify in someway ethnically with that, then that is her personal choice, not ours, as well as Sheila embracing her Mexican heritage from her father's side. I consider Sheila E a Black Latina respectively, embracing all of her heritage and respecting that. Sheila being referenced as a “sista” has absolutely nothing to do with the shade of her skin, but more or less how she has always related/respected/embraced/communicated, etc., with members of the black community over the years, respectively.
On another note, I think this nonsense dividing those within the black community by the "shades of their skin tones," and breaking that down in "percentages" to determine who gets classified to "pass through the Black door or not" is total BS, and is no different than having an "apartheid" mentality.
Those who have no issue defining themselves as Black or African-American, based on their similar/shared cultures/ethnicities/life experiences/ histories etc., among others within that group of many complexions, should not have to be "watered-down" to be "validated or valued" as human beings, when they are already inclusive within the human species. Couple Alert: Prince and Misty Copeland
Couple Alert: Prince and American Ballet dancer Misty Copeland were seen together at the Essence: Black Women in Music, honoring the beautiful Janelle Monae. Intial reports stated the two were just working together but since the appearance together at a major event, it seems there is something more.

In some place it's still a power struggle... the whole black white thing is just that now.
Even though there are still areas that are seriously racist and race issues have to be addressed... The story of Prince and dating a 'sista' really doesn't make sense, this whole thing is very fun...
It's a self esteem thing for some to claim Prince's relationships if he 'dates or marry's' a "black woman'
But wasn't Mani part Black or something?

Who are you asking this question to and in reference to what?
It doesn't matter at all, but this is a discussion site and so people discuss shit ad nauseum. Go figure!
As to why they said Sheila E was a sista, who knows. She ain't a sista, never has been, never was. No matter how many people say, "WELL DUR U DONT GOTTA BE BLACK TO BE A SISTA". Yes the fuck you do, sit down!

^^^^ LOL | |

Really and how do you know this? What's your experience with that assumption?
One being define as a "sista" can have many definitions. If someone says Teena Marie was always considered a "sista" within the black community, well, she was, as she was loved and embraced by many within that community. Saying that relates to the type of music Teena sang, in which Teena's "sound" so-to-speak" or the "type" of music Teena sung, was more or less common among artists and members of the Black community. Referring to Teena as a "sista" had nothing to do with Teena's racial background/skin color. That's where people get confused when they hear people from the Black community, refer to Teena like that.
As far as Sheila, I believe, but can't speak for orger HatrinaHaterwitz, but that is probably more or less what she meant in a sense, when stating that "Sheila E." was always considered a "sista" among the Black community, so no reason for anyone to panic, because no one is "trying to claim her" but more or less embrace the respect she's shown towards our community over the years. Not to mention that Sheila's mother is of Creole heritage (black/french), so that could be a reason of her understanding a lot about Black culture, as well as sharing a combination of her own with us. No need for anyone to sit down, but you're welcome to relax now. [Edited 2/17/11 12:47pm]

I absolutely won't read any of that, gonna be honest. Why? Because I'm not getting into a philosophical debate on your race-bending ethics ideas. The context of the comment is there in the article's title. Not only is it inaccurate about Prince's sex life, it is inaccurate about Sheila's race.
This is why sites like MTO should never be used as a source - they don't know what the fuck they are talking about and they invite silly little games of semantics like the one you're playing right now.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
There's actually nothing "race-bending" about anything I stated nor am I playing any "game of semantics" here. It's funny how you and others are quick to throw those types of comments at others, like in your previous post, but when called on your bullsh*t, you can't step up to the plate or back it up. Nothing new, and with that, being said, I'll leave you to your ignorance. Carry on.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
You haven't called me on my bullshit because there's no bullshit coming from this way. I'm sorry I didn't play into your bait, but I can see from a mile away your game. It's cool.
Weird that you somehow take offense to Sheila E not being black.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Actually, no offense at all. I know the deal with that. But it is "weird" that you took offense to someone associating Sheila E with the term "Black". I was just calling you on it. As a matter of fact, if you weren't so concerned about what I thought about it, you would not have responded. But it's okay, I understand. Carry on sweetcakes.
Now what was this thread about? [Edited 2/17/11 13:45pm]

STOP THE ARGUMENT OVER RACE. I'M A WHITE MALE OF SCOTTISH/ENGLISH DECENT. I HAVE NO DOG IN THIS FIGHT BUT SHEILA E. IS IDENTIFIABLY BLACK. SHE IS A SISTA. COMPARE HER FEATURES WITH JODY WATLEY. AFRICAN AMERICANS COME IN ALL COLORS AND SHADES. THE SLAVE SHIPS DROPPED AFRICANS OFF ALL OVER THE CARRIBEAN AND LATIN AMERICA. DO SOME RESEARCH PEOPLE. MEXICO HAS LARGE AFRICAN MONUMENTS FROM THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO. THAT MEANS THAT AFRICANS WERE THERE. SHEILA'S MEXICAN ROOTS ARE AFRICAN ROOTS. IF A DNA TEST WERE DONE ON ALL OF US, IT'LL SHOW THAT WE ALL CAME FROM AFRICA. EVEN MY PALE, SKINNY WHITE A _ _...Jason

Really? I triple dare any one of you smart ass folks that don't think so, to try telling her that!
Just last week Sheila E was on the Black Owned Cable Channel, TV One. On an episode of the show they created to celebrate Black History Month called "Way Black When". Talking about herself, her family and Prince.

You're mistaken. You fill up your posts with lies and inaccuracies and guesstimations. I am not scared of her associating with the term black, I am saying she isn't black. For some reason, you think Teena Marie and Sheila E should get honorary African American cards. Cool. But they still aren't black. And the term "sista" and the term "brotha" come from black roots.
