Prince's Sign 'O The Times tour rated 15 best tour of all time ? Not sure if this is the right board to put this under, sorry if it's not...
I read on someone's Tumblr blog that Prince's SOTT tour was rated 15th best tour of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine. I tried looking this up all over the Internet for confirmation, can't find a damn thing about it. I even tried searching it on the Rolling Stone mag website, but their search is kind of... fuckall.
Has anyone else heard this? If so, do you have a source that you can link me to?
IMO - SOTT is the most influential album in my life. Also the SOTT film really struck me too... love 'em both. So I wouldn't be surprised if this claim is true. A strawberry mind, a body that's built for 2. A kiss on the spine, we do things we never do.

In my opinion it's the greatest tour of all time. (No.2 - Parade Tour.) Too bad not much of this era was recorded.

I don't remember Rolling Stone ever publishing such a list. Why didn't you link to the Tumblr?

What are you talking about??? Damn near every show he's performed has been recorded! Multi-camera recordings, probably not, but they've all been at least recorded with a single camera in the back of the venue.
Now, if you're referring to the release of these shows, then that's a completely different story. Whenever he comes to pass, God forbid it being anytme soon, I'd almost bet his legal wish would be to have a lot of this footage destroyed.

I meant as in bootlegged/released.

Because I'm incredibly lazy and will have to dig for at least an hour to find it again. Agh, sorry. Guess it perhaps is untrue then.
But yeah, SOTT is the best imo as well... That's all that matters to me! A strawberry mind, a body that's built for 2. A kiss on the spine, we do things we never do.

No, I definitely remember seeing that list published and thought I'd take a stab at finding it but haven't been able to.

Parade - Sign "O" The Times - Lovesexy - those performances are without doubt some of the best - ever.
Just, how can one human being (Prince) be responsible for all this brilliant music,
it's just incredible.
Prince 4Ever. | |

If there is such a list, he's all over it. NOTHING compares to prince.

It lost money, had to be cancelled early and the actual live show was nowhere as good as the movie.

lovesexy was better so was act 123

I know it isn't really a good document of the tour, but I think the SOTT Live DVD is still the best concert DVD of all time.
Oh, what I would give to have lived in the '80s... You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Great tour! But there's just something about SOTT that really rubs Musicology's face in the dirt. Maybe it's my huge lesbo crush on Sheila...
I might just end up watching it for the second time this week. Taking out the Bailey's... A strawberry mind, a body that's built for 2. A kiss on the spine, we do things we never do.

hmm, thinking way back I think Rolling Stone did release best concert tours of all time, but to my recollection the high rated Prince tour was 1999. Not sure when this issue was released. merf

Dont think so funksterr but I could be mistaken. My understanding is that Prince had already written so much material during/while on the tour and was bored with the SOTT material. Also, he and the SOTT band were far from home/tired from the European SOTT tour/aftershows and instead of launching the US leg of the SOTT tour which was supposed to be after the europe shows, he opted to release the SOTT movie. Considered one of his 'biggest mistakes' from a legendary building/SOTT promotional standpoint at the time cause it was such an amazing tour.
If they only knew how big his legend would grow! I was at a bar last night here in LA and struck up a conversation with a few people about Prince, and everyone who was a musician at the bar knew of his genius! It was so cool. However, none of them had seen him perform.
So how do you promote your affection for Prince? see my thread on this... Whatever it is, it´s got to be PHUNKy!!!

I think the actual live show was better than the movie, because the movie is clearly (maybe a bit too clearly) lip-synced.

I always thought the live SOTT shows I've heard were better than the movie. No unnecessary dialog, no edits, no acting. Prince always edits the hell out of any released live material. It's never the same as being there or hearing it in its entirety. Just hearing Dorothy Parker coupled with Madhouse 4 live around the same time as the Madhouse Sessions is classic.
Case in point on the live edits. Prince - Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas. Now, I was at that show as well as the 2 Hollywood shows. In no way do you get the whole experience of the One Night Alone tour from that movie. The movie seems like such random picks from the show. Now, I'm happy have both those DVDs, but if I had the choice, I'd like them to be complete. I don't care for my funk to be filtered. Most people never see Prince for more than the stuff than made the radio, and it's not like he's gone out of the way to offer up loads of live concert videos for public consumption. Especially considering that he supposedly records every single show. I think if he threw the whole damn thing out there, he would actually pick up some converts. People obviously want to see him live judging from all the sell out shows. Christ Almighty, RELEASE IT MAN!... They can always use the >> button on the DVD Player.. "For those of you on valium, My name is Prince" cracknbush

I wish that he would release a live DVD box set that features complete concerts every tour that he's done. ( And a few one-off, aftershows and live television apperances in there too.)

The only aftershow video he ever put out was "The Sacrifice of Victor" at Bagleys Warehouse in London.. and that was '93... A DVD set with a "complete" unedited aftershow from every tour would be a fan's jewel. Get some of it on one of the tv stations during a tour of mostly "oldies" (like this one), and he might sell some DVDs. I hope Prince still keeps recording as long as he can, but it seems like if he is stock piling thousands of unreleased tunesl, it might be beneficial to get some of it out there. I let a friend hear Electric Intercourse the other day, and she was very impressed. It's not just the hard core fans. That period of material was popular for a reason. cracknbush

Yes. | |

And that is what he should do.

It is shocking really that an artist of Prince's status and reputation as a live performer has only ever released two complete concert videos in his career (the Syracuse Purple Rain show and the Dortmund Lovesexy show, all his other releases have only ever been highly edited 'highlights' of concerts). Both of which have been deleted for years and neither of which have ever been officially released on DVD or Blu-Ray. [Edited 3/3/11 1:08am]

Well, with every good thing on the earth (eg: Prince's concerts) there is a bad thing (eg: Prince not releasing his concerts).
U2 have released too many concert films (recent tours get 2 concert films) and Prince hasn't released enough (and the ones on DVD are not to standard) [Edited 3/3/11 1:17am]

You don't know what you're talking about.
I wouldn't call that 'thinking'.

I remember the opening Musicology show was broadcast live? to select movie theatres around the country. Never released for sale though, but I believe that was in it's entirety. cracknbush
