Shockadelica: Tribute Album. As posted as a footnote elsewhere...
I'm listening to Shockadelica (the tribute album). Gunnar Andreas Berg & Erlend Smalås's take on Rockhard in a Funky Place is so good. Once I took the shit out of that album (Electronic, Indie, Industrial(?) and Country) it threw out some really good interpretations. Lots of folk that lends itself to so much of Prince's material.
It's a shame that Prince never allowed it go ahead. I'm sure he had what he felt were valid reasons. Being a dick was probably a factor in that too

I finally got my hands on this a couple of weeks ago. There is some really good stuff there but I think this could have been edited to maybe 2 CD's. There is lot's of filler. But I agree with you, it should have been released.

Have not heard this. I want to though. "Do Me Baby: Austin, TX Does Prince" is another pretty good tribute. As well as "Purple Pain" with 9 Swedish punk bands. That SPIN tribute "Purplish Rain" was well done too. I don't know why stop one tribute when there are already many others out there. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

The project is a Norwegian tribute album to prince. It features many of our countries most popular artists. Christer Falck, the man behind the project is a long time Prince fan and Norwegian record company executive. He gathered all these artists to get together and make this compilation. I agree that it would have been a good 2 disc cd. It's a hell of alot of fillers. But since it was meant as showing the love for his music by musicians with very different backgrounds, it had to be a big cd. And it wasn't released more than 1000 or 2000 copies I think. I think the deal was that it was just about financing the cost of making the album, and not making any extra money of it. It wasn't a big hit either, but a fine and variated listen.

Njin is right: the 5-cd set was actually released (5,000 box sets). The initial idea was to create a 50-song tribute in honour of Prince's 50th birthday, but eventually it grew to a massive 81 covers in total.
I´m not sure, but maybe it can still be ordered here: http://www.ccrecords.musiconline.no/shop/displayAlbum.asp?id=34576

This package is comical. I've only heard 3 songs so far that I will EVER listen 2 again. I'm about 1/2 way thru the set.

I like a lot of it small circles, big wheels!
I've got a pretty firm grip on the obvious!

I like Kenneth Ishak's "I Wanna Be Your Lover," Thom Hell's catchy pop take on "Crazy You," Suzanne Sumbundu's beautiful synth-soul cover of "Damn U," and the haunting Bellman version of "The Holy River"
They don't have to be better than the original, they're just interesting takes on what Prince did.

I like a lot of acoustic music so this album is really nice for me. They're different to Prince's originals. On some I wouldn't say better but equal. But again it's my opinion

Personally, I like all the tracks where they interpret the material in new and different ways (regardless of style). I think that's something that should always be encouraged.
When they try to re-create or stay too close to the originals, it does nothing for me.
