Nude Tour, what went wrong?

Nude tour, what went wrong?

SOTT and Lovesexy, amazing tours!

For Nude Tour, the band did not changed that much.

But to me it failed.

The stage design was barren, there was not a lot of respect between him and his band and the whole tour was a cash-grab. That's what went wrong.

It seems The Nude Tour failed in your expectation as a live show, which is fair enough.

However, as a tour not a lot went wrong actually. Despite a handful of concerts being moved to smaller venues, the tour was a big success, in fact it was one of Prince's most extensive and successful European tours, both in the number of concerts played and tickets sold, and remains so to this day.

it probably failed in OP's perception because the shows were SHORT and EXTREMELY unvaried. the only wat to distinguish between shows is listening to prince yelling out the place, ptherwise the setlists are all the same. Only near the end did some variation appear.

...well, did you see it? I did

Check what ever audio you can find, I dont like it.

I would like to say it this way. Prince has given me some of the best concert experiences in my life.

And the worst.

I love the Japan video. Still want it on DVD. But I didnt like the dancers and the stage didnt have a visual impact as SOTT and Lovesexy.

Judging the tour by the videos I've seen, the Nude Tour was basically a 79-90 Greatest Hits tour with new-jack elements and aerobic/dancing bullshit. The tour pales in comparison to the 1992 and 1995 tours... But I guess it was cool enough because that was the time when Prince was still a global superstar touring the whole world in 18.000-40.000 seats arenas...

Hence the title, The Nude Tour, the title had nothing to do with the amount of clothes they were wearing.

It was a stripped down, back to basics greatest hits money spinner.

No, my first tour was D&P in '92.

I have the audio boots, and that is enough, i don't like it either.

SoTT did not sell as well as Prince and Warner expected. The SoTT movie tanked in theaters. The big band and complex sets of Lovesexy made it a money-losing tour. So to get back to profitability Prince stripped the nude tour down to the bare essentials.

I admit I actually haven't seen the whole show, but from what I did see it looked like Prince was in rare form - "The Question of U/Electric Man" is like the best performance he ever gave, to me.

I saw Gentofte. It was just super lame, all the energy from SOTT & Lovesexy was gone.

In retrospective, I think the biggest shame is that the energy were gone for good. I have seen shows before and after Nude Tour. Several shows in europe and New York. Aftershows too....

I love Prince, occasionaly finding it hard to think strait when his music itches my brain!

But the magic is not as "up your face" as it use to be.

Remember he was touring after the "masterpiece" that is the Batman album...need we say more???

Also he thought he was going to make loads of cash ( "touring the "hits" for the "last time"??!!) which ( apart if you are Leonard Cohen) is never a good reason to go out on the road.

confused confused confused

for me at Wembley it all seemed very rushed, the whole performance was kinda dry and rehearsed. It felt that way at the time... and lately i have listened back and it sounds terrible.

Every song is performed as if it's on speed.... neutral

Lovesexy was the f***ing bomb...nude was awfull.... nod

I've always liked the nude tour, saw it three times live.

It was a stripped down tour, which was a good thing after lovesexy. I mean, he probably couldn't have topped that! Party man and baby i'm a star a cool, always like the performace of sexy dancer...and well, the question of you....amazing.

A concert doesn't always have to contain amazing stages, fireworks and stuff.

I never saw the D&P tour, but from i've seen from it on YT, it had some really bad moments.

Point taken, but P wasn't enjoying the Nude tour......possibly the same for D and P.

Was he already starting to get old???

Maybe, but then he came back with the Gold tour.......

I really like the Nude Tour, it's futuristic, polished, and unwordly how perfect his dancing is. The version of Baby I'm a Star is incredible, as is the showmanship during When Doves Cry, Partyman, Kiss... etc.

I think it's cool that he ran the beat of the future through the next three songs. The momentum and energy is intense to me.

I like it when he tries something conceptually different.

Hard to disagree with your last sentence.

Polished yes.

When did he go unpolished again?

I'd say his look was unpolished around the crazy sideburns period of Act 1 and 2, and the music itself became gaudy and chunky, as did the wardrobe (in comparison to the Nude Tour), of course this was a direct evolution of which Diamonds and Pearls was in the middle of. From what I see, I don't like that show (D&P) very much in terms of excitement and energy. But it could be that I have never seen a decent proshot version.

Someone has to stick up for it.

I loved the Nude tour. As its name implied, it was back to basics and I think it was the right move for the time period in his career. There were two things that made this tour particularly good...

1. Good versions of the songs, often in full and with a tight band.

2. The best opening 20 minutes of any of his tours to date. Retrospective video intro / The Future / 1999 / Housquake / Sexy dancer, Kiss. Without dropping a beat. Bam! Thats a killer.

It was indeed a fantastic opening onslaught. I remember one reviewer in either the NME or Musical Express saying it was the greatest opening 20 minutes of a concert he d ever seen. However, for me the rest of the show lacked energy and was a disappointment. D and P tour was much better in terms of excitement, showmanship and spectacle.

I saw the show in Gentofte as well, and it was sooo disapointing. Hannover wasn't much better. But I saw the shows in Sweden later on in the tour as well, and they were a big improvement. But even so Nude tour is still at the bottom of my list of Prince tours.

I don't think it had anything to do with the stripped down approach, more with the fact that his heart obviously wasn't in it, especially at the beginning of the tour, and it was a bit of a shock seeing that after his passionate performances on the Lovesexy tour.

I don't think Prince is an artist who necesarily does well with a tour planned more than 6 months before it actually begins, like the Nude tour was, he has moved on at that point + the show wasn't promoting any album.

It was also rumoured that he really wanted to be back in the States dealing with the editing problems with Graffiti Bridge, and the fact that he wanted to be somewhere else was certainly quite apparant at Gentofte Stadium.

And then there were the Gameboyz...ill

I loved it as well. I watch the DVD of the Japan concert often. "When Doves Cry," "Question of U" and "Do Me Baby" alone make it a great show for me.

The Nude Tour is one of my favourites!

The tour had amazing versions of many songs, including When Doves Cry, The Question Of U, Alphabet Street, Bambi and Purple Rain.
