Who knows, he prolly thought/thinks it's alright, but wouldn't wear it. Many AAs think natural is beautiful, but wouldn't wear the hairstyle, including me. Too much work, where with processing, it can be more easily tamed and controlled. Have u ever seen an image of of a black person's afro when they first wake up in the morning??? I doubt it. Not a pretty sight and sure not an easy handle to comb/pick out, then pat it down into a nice shape, maybe a spray or two.
