Hello was written around a time Prince's body guard pushed someone. Mags like National Enquier and other gossip mags were talking about his weir diets, his controling behaviors, and all kinds of weird things Prince did.
So Hello was a way for him to just say that. Hello.
"I'm not afraid, I eat what I want and I am happy thats for sure."
All responses to articles about him that appear at the time.
"You call them bodyguards but I call them my friends"
Then at the end he talks about cruel words.
Kind of like Billy Jack Bitch intended for CJ gossip columnist at the Star Tribune.
MJ did a song like hello called, "Leave me alone." I suppose all superstars at some point in their career write a song about the media that is attacking them or telling half truths or lies. Hello was Prince's first.
Now Dolphin, I would love to hear peoples thoughts on that. I mean Dolphins are intelligent. Maybe there is a metaphor about being under water, or drowning. The first part sounds as if he is struggling with writing a perfect song:
"How Beautiful to the words have to be, before the conquer every heart"
I think the next line is to his record company: "How will I even knwo if I am in the right key, if you make me stop before I start."
"If I came back as a dolphin would you listen to me then" What is a dolphin? A symbol or logo for something? Or is it a representation of being drowned or maybe it is the sounds a dolphin makes. It can only communicate with what sounds like music. Many Prince made this connection? I am sure there is a thread about this somewhere, but I have not seen it.
I would like to know what the hell "Theres others here with us is about." Sounds deep, but then again it could be something he just came up with on Halloween. But some of the lyrics are erie because later in his own life similar like events occured.

Yeah alot of P songs kind of caught me. Sometimes the sound is so good that I really don't listen to the words, I'm too busy dancing. But then I have to specifically go back and listen to the songs. I Would Die 4 U got me too at first, not thinking anything weird, I just didn't get who he was talking to...IIWYG got me of course, so did Anna Stesia. Just last week, we were discussing the meaning of P control since a couple folks had totally different meanings for it.
Sometimes its just one line that throws you off and makes you scratch your head. When I was younger, Little Red Corvette had me lost. And I swear, I don't know why, but The Question of U and Joy in Repeition totally fooled with my mind, I was young though, didn't quite get "it." Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Believe it or not, and don't make fun of me, but I think the only song I haven't figured out is "7." Please don't ask me why, I just don't get it. "I never want to stop singing this song!" Prince in Montreal, 12/2/11, just before performing Purple Rain

I Always thought it was from Prince 2 God "Will U Shine A Light And Try 2 Guide Me" thinking he will keep gettin reicarnated..... instead of bein allowed in2 heaven "Its Happened B4 I Knocked On Ur Door...But U Wouldnt Let Me In" because he thinks God disproves of his naughty lyric content (Erotic City, Head etc..) and he will have 2 stay on earth until his spirits pure...hence why it starts with "How Beautiful Do The Words Have 2 Be..."
Ofcourse it is only my opinion, funny how we look at things diffrently init?...makes alot of sense...2 me anyway ...im most probaly wrong tho hence why i asked [Edited 1/12/11 15:07pm]

I mentioned this to my sis today while we were in the car and she hadn't realized that either. Kinda of brings tears to my eyes when I actually think about that you know. Makes it so much more of a powerful song. Great song to listen to on Easter! Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Dophins represent resurrection, at least in Christian symbolism. Also keep in mind that this song was written around the time when he visited Puerto Rico with Mayte in 1993 and he probably saw some dolphins there who inspired him. The transition process of the namechange and later resurrection as were already a hot topic in some of his songs back then, see also the lyrics to Endorphinmachine ( reinventing yourself, the chance to come back and live again, etc., "every now and then there comes a time you must defend
I still don´t know what "Wedding Feast" and "Digital Garden" are about.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

"Jack U Off" was a questionable song to many of his own bandmates... they didn't use the term jack off to refer to messing with a woman... neither did prince.... hmmmm? Was he playing the queer card just for mystique?
I never understood these lyrics:
"She knows how 2 make U feel like your stuff ain't brown 2nite" - Baby Knows

to me it is about how not matter what, no matter how dark things seem, we are never alone--that there are others with us. And that the others include those that have passed that we loved. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

Dolphin is about his battles with WB. You know, that ole chestnut. First of all in the video he's wearing the "slave" written on his face, he was in that frame of mind at the time. I ran the lyrics through my Princespeak-English translator, and this is what it came up with:
How beautiful do the words have 2 be/Before they conquer every heart?
How commercially successful do my songs have to be before you give me my due, and how will I achieve that if you don't let me release my usual one album per year?
If I came back as a dolphin Would U listen 2 me then?
Would you, WB, treat me better if I was one of those acts that performed whatever you told me? Like a dolphin jumping through a hoop? No matter what, I won't follow your shitty business model, but I'll still be successful.
Why does my brother have 2 go hungry When U told him there was food 4 all?
Why do the lesser or struggling artists on your label get treated badly, when you promised them they would be supported? These are the next generation of rock stars that will make your company money eventually, that is, if you give them the support they need.
If I'm under water, will U find me? Will U shine a light and try 2 guide me?
I've asked you guys for help in promoting and making my material successful, time and time again, but after I signed that big contract, yall kinda made me feel like a red-headed stepchild.
Anything else? Chas | |

I agree, I think Hello is kinda self-explanatory if you were following his career at the time, like with the bodyguard and the tabloids, etc.
As for "There's others here with us," my theory is that he was playing around with some sounds and discovered some that sound like a horror movie, and then pulled out his notebook and wrote a song about it. Maybe just to give the band a laugh. Or maybe the song is about a bad dream he had, which would make a good segue into a song about dreams. Oh yeah it does segue into a song about "All My Dreams."
