Remember when prince mentioned presidents before George Washington on Tavis Smiley

And everyone gave him heat and said wtf are you talking about and that he needed to check his facts...

An educated American would know that under the articles of confederation there were 8 presidents. All of these preceded GW. Educated Americans would know this but instead far too many criticized prince and basically called him an idiot.
Check your facts before foolishly ridiculing our man.

I'm just a lurker but this always bothered me. Sorry if I come across rude smile

No sweat. I wonder how many people around DC drive on the John Hanson Freeway and wonder "Who was John Hanson"?

Probably all of them, LOL.

Those were not Presidents of the United States because, until we had a constitution, there was no United States.

George Washington is the first president of the United States. shrug

Thats not the point. We were america either way besides, don't try to tell me that when people said wtf prince is talking about, they considered what you just said...Most have NO idea about the articles. Prince said there were presidents BEFORE GW..he was right.

It probably would have gone over a lot better if he had said it in the context of a historical discussion of post-revolutionary America. But he brought it up in the context of his crazy conspiracy theory ramblings and it’s pretty clear that he thinks there’s some evil reason that he was kept from knowing it. And when I head Wecome 2 America played at MSG it was pretty clear he still feels this way. Prince has bats in his belfrey, and there’s nothing wrong with people saying so.

Yeah, the conspiratorial nature of what he was talking about (paired with his comments about chemtrails) were what people were reacting to more, I think. It's not like this was hidden or censored information.

every time prince says something intelligent factual and based in reality, some programmed dipshit labels him a conspiracy theory nut. ignorance is deadly. our country (and yours too) murder innocent people daily based upon biased inflamitory rhetoric designed to both incite hate toward those with different beliefs or those who are fighting for basic human rights, and discredit those who speak the truth.

Fair points smile. I agree in that he has his wild conspiracy thoughts and i'm sure he feels that he wasn't told anything to keep him censored from some ridiculous truth that the government didn't want people to know (or something like that). But at the same time i can see where he is coming from...schools ought to teach the kids about times before the constitution. it's part of our nations history. Things like trial and error are what make up our nation. We've had many many failures before reaching success and when people talk down on prince for stating that it's almost as if they are denying it.

In the south they don't teach about slavery.

Much of the United States' history is not taught in schools. Smallpox blankets, anyone?

Imagine all the things going on from the Reagan years until now that certainly won't be taught.

And why is America named after Amerigo Vespucci if Columbus (ahem) "discovered" it?

Is this a history lesson or some bullshit? If you don't know the expanded history of the US, it's not the fault of the schools rather the fault of YOU. Knowledge is power. smile

Exactly. Prince could have become a student of history and learned about this very easily. But he decided to focus on a musical career instead. That he makes time to read now, and did not then, was entirely his choice. Nobody locked his ass out of the history section of the library. shrug

You all seem to be pointing right at his chemtrail comment...If that is your only way to prove anything then i feel bad discussing this with you guys because its a very low way of making an argument...Yes he did make a stupid remark about chemtrails but that is NOT THE POINT. we are talking about his remark about the presidents.

One must become a history student in order to be informed about the articles of confederation? I wouldn't ever want my kids to go your school district smile. The first area where you are taught those things is in school. Yes parents play a part and so does the person himself but lets be honest. When you go to history class you should expect teachers to point these things out and to TEACH them. What good does it do us arguing against teachers TEACHING.

People thought our leaders were crazy going to war with britain not once but TWICE(we won both times) against all popular belief. Crazy shit happens, don't be all to skeptical of things. There aren't random ideas like that out there for no reason. Now i'm not saying any jet liner is flying up there spraying chemicals to 'control' us or some other bull, but i know for a fact that things similar to that occur. here in NJ a county openly admitted to spraying chemicals via helicopters against certain insects...while that doesn't necessarily affect us humans, you never know smile. In colorado they even announced that they had intentions to 'spray' vaccines against the swine-flu as they were worried that too few people would sign up and get vaccinated. All in all....don't take what prince says too literal, he exaggerates everything and makes everything seem like the apocalypse but maybe for a bigger reason. Who knows, maybe he really is trying to stir up things and make noise so that people look into the thing as a whole a little bit more.

Boy were the people shocked when they found out the US military..OUR military was testing LSD on their own soldiers smile

Really? They teach the articles of confederation in the district where your (likely mythical) kids go to school? I'd be willing to bet they don't. lol

I'm a contemporary of Prince's, and went to school (in an excellent district) at a time when the focus was on teaching kids something, rather than bucking up their self esteem by grading papers in purple instead of red, or banning spelling bees or time tests because of the potential damage to the psyches of the little darlings. And I can honestly say, outside of a unit here and there on the American Revolution and the Constitution, these events were not delved deeply. Hell, I took multiple courses in the rhetoric of campaigns and revolutions in college - and they didn't get into all that.

So I really don't have any quibble with Prince's assertion that he wasn't told about the other "presidents." My issue is that he makes it sound as if this information was withheld from him for some nefarious reason. That is utter nonsense.

The powers that be have done a remarkable job programming us. thumbs up!

When you bring up conspiracy. The public is programed to call you wacky

I know it's not in the government's DNA to do anything unjust to the public.

Look, scepticism is a huge point in humans' favor. Doubt is what drives science. Modernity has come about through the questioning and hard-won rationale of thinkers and other rationalists. Taking things on faith is a backward thing, and points towards a deceleration in our society. Until you back up what you say, you're just part of the problem.

They taught it in Philadelphia schools at the time also...and I am almost Prince's age as well.

Anyhoo, I didn't find anything unusual about what Prince said because I'm used to the way he communicates. His statements frequently come out awkward but I normally get what he's driving at. I cringe because I know that most people will be like, eek

Besides, I found Tavis to be far more creepy in that interview than Prince. All the groveling and bowing and scraping was weird. lol
