Prince Super Bowl performance - still the greatest of all time

THe Black Eyed Peas confirmed that last night. I can not believe how lame they are live. Take away the million lights and backup dancers, what do you have. I had never really paid attention to them before but I was not impressed. Am I supposed to really think that Fergie is a singer?

Prince - on the symbol shaped stage and lighting up the the sky in the down pour. It was epic. No one has beat it.

I was thinking about Prince as I watched the Black Eyed Peas' performance last night, too!

It kind of made me appreciate Prince's talent and how much of a perfectionist he is.

I thought their sound was horrible.

Their singing was horrible. It sounded like they were just screaming on stage.

They pretty much did stood there until Usher came out and did a little dancing for us.

I did kind of like Slash's performance (until Fergie started singing).

And remember it was raining on Prince when he performed and he still did an amazing job.

In high heels on a slick stage holding an electric guitar no less- and he put it down like no one else could. I felt so good for him because he overcame something that would have ruined lesser aritsts and the whole world saw that he is still the man.

Without a doubt Prince has given the best halftime show yet, with U2 a close second...

Still, that's no reason to bash the BEP's last night. They did their thing, and for modern music , it was actually quite good. The mics were on 95% of the time, they sang in key, and the whole thing was like a sci-fi mind trip.... In other words, it was, what it was...

Now, that National Anthem by Cristina A. ... They can keep that mess.

Prince was the best Super Bowl Halftime performer I've seen and I'm not saying that because he's my favorite but its' just the truth. The BEP's weren't bad but I've seen better from others but I was entertained. Prince was the truth that night in 2007.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Also, most people have NO IDEA just how hard it was raining during Prince's show four years ago. I've seen some home movies from someone who was filming from back stage and it was really pouring... I mean like a monsoon. AMAZING!

I agree. Prince's Super Bowl performance is the greatest one ever. He was absolutely incredible. Of course I wasn't expecting The Black Eyed Peas to come anywhere close to that, but when you think about how great Prince was and how subpar the BEP were, it's sort of dissapointing. I wish Prince could perform at the Superbowl every year lol.

I agree...let's petition for Prince to be the halftime show every year.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Seriously, how many people could do a superbowl performance that was basically one guy playing front and center and pulled it off like Prince did? Not many. I can't think of one at the moment.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

I Googled Super Bowl Hallftime shows yesterday and came across about 15 -20 sites that ranked the Top 10 Super Bowl Halftime shows. Prince was in the Top5 in virtually all of the polls and number 1 in almost half of them. (MJ and U2 were the only artists who beat Prince when he wasn't number 1). They're just opinions but P's Super Bowl show will stand the test of time.

All good things they say never last...

Just read Perez Hilton liked yesterday's show, said it was a while since he enjoyed on of the performances. Since PRINCE actually.

And yes, I agree. It made me a die-hard fan.

One thing I loved about Prince's performance (aside from the performance itself) was when he tore off his wet do-rag and threw it into the audience . . . that could've resulted in a very BAD hair day, but he still looked good afterward!

Personally, I like U2's a little better. I'm a total junkie for full length songs, or at least close to full length ones. U2 chose Beautiful Day and Where The Streets Have No Name. Prince chose bits and pieces of songs, and too many cover tunes. His performance was nearly flawless, so I rank him #2. Now Prince the artist is about 10 billion times better than U2, even though U2 is my second fave. Hard to believe I rank U2 over MJ and Stevie Wonder, but I could always change my mind on that... I did not even bother watching the Pees. For today's crap music they are among the best, but that's like being the best smelling crap in a pasture.

It sure as hell was...I was there.

Most people also have no idea that Prince chose to go on in spite of the storm. They had already filmed the entire dress rehearsal to show on the jumbo-tron just in case the storm got too intense. It was his decision to perform live in the rain and he was outstanding.

I will never forget that night...I was extremely proud of him.

Greatest of all time? Yeah!

At let's also not forget that one of the main electical cables was severed when the stage was being moved to the field, and there was a very brave stage hand holding bare electical wires together during the whole show. That man deserves a hell of a lot of praise.

As much as I loved Prince's Superbowl performance, I can't help thinking it would have been even BETTER if:

  • he had decided to use a full orchestra instead of the marching band. This is just my personal preference, of course, since I don't like the sound of marching bands mixed with Prince's music. And an orchestra would have captured more of the emotion at the end of "Purple Rain" than the marching band did.
  • he had replaced "Baby I'm a Star" with something stronger and funkier. It's the weakest part of the show (IMO), especially the marching band's segue into "Proud Mary".
  • he had played the opening chords of "Purple Rain" on guitar (as originally written) instead of piano. The opening chords on are much more captivating when played on guitar than on a piano. I've never liked the piano opening he's done over the past few years.

My knitpicky personal preferences aside, Prince's SB show was awesome with no over-the-top effects or heavy reliance on choreography. I think the BEP's being given the half-time show slot was a reaction to some of the complaints about half-time show acts being older musicians who are past their commercial peak, but the Peas just made the case for keeping the legends on the roster for future half-time shows.

I liked Prince's alot too but I have him rranked third. I liked Michael Jacksons number one and U2's second. I have Prince in at a close 3. Either way those 3 ALL ROCKED the SuperBowl Halftime shows. Lets bring in Ac/DC next year and we will see the greatest show EVER!!

I thought Prince performance was OK.

I wish he had continued to play Jimi Hendrix's All along the watchtower, instead of going into

the Foo Fighter's Best of you. I like the song but Prince on guitar, playing All along the

watchtower, would've been speacial. guitar

The only part I liked was him performing purple rain in the rain.

Now thats what I call perfect timing.

But my favorite moment was when U2 performed Where the streets have no name.

The image of the twin towers, with the names of those who were killed in 911, rising to

the sky.

Very emotional. cry

Precisely - and this is why Prince is still the single greatest live artist that you can see on this planet. He doesnt need 500 dancers with light suits and help from other artists to hold an audience on the biggest stage in the world at that moment. He has always come through in the clutch.
