I was just listening to a mix of Purple Rain era music album-protege & live and I'm still blown away by the electricity of this era, I love how the music connects to the film, Protege albums, B sides long versions and all other music created-released and unreleased that came from this high time in Purple History. A very productive and creative year for Prince accompanied by drastic change and a huge output of songs. Songs 4 ATWIAD & the Family also created during this period. I understand why Possessed can be a word to describe him at this time.

Anyone have any background information on the Dance Electric? I was just listening to the Prince version, very raw & electric. I know Prince has a crazy range to his voice, but I hear more voices than Prince Wendy & Lisa...

That's why I actually posted it, I just pulled this from a site because I wanted to pull info on the string players. I wonder were they not included on the original albums but included on the tapes or something. I thought they were, I think Novi is credited on the Glamorous Life & Ice Cream Castles...

Initial tracking for Prince's initial version took place on 17 August, 1984

(two days before The Screams Of Passion) at the Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA (listed on the album as "Paisley Park Recording, Somewhere in Minnesota").

Prince reportedly gave the song to André Cymone after Cymone's mother asked Prince for a song (Cymone himself was too proud to do so).

André Cymone recorded lead vocal overdubs between late 1984 and Summer 1985 at one of four studios (which one is not known): Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, CA, USA; Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA; Celestial Sound, New York, NY, USA; or Metro Studio, Minneapolis, MN, USA.
Prince also referred to "the dance electric" in the song God, recorded three days later.

I know, that's why I love to have background info and recording dates etc

I mean hearing that Screams of Passion w/Revolution rehearsal during that time and the sounds were SOOOOO different yet his minneapolis sound was evolving.

I love the Nothing Compares 2 U studio cut that feels totally like a Purple Rain era song, the ride of the songs reminds me of Another Lonely Christmas

When released as a single, the song became Prince's second number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and also topped the two component charts, the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs[1] and Hot Dance Club Play charts,[2] as well as becoming a UK Top 10 hit. The B-side was the lyrically controversial "Erotic City".

The song was also notable for opening with a funeral-like organ solo with Prince giving the "eulogy" for "this thing called life." That eulogy ends with a distinctive drum machine pattern and then quickly becomes a full hard rock number with heavy guitar, bass and keyboards. The song's percussion was programmed with the venerable Linn LM-1 drum machine, an instrument frequently used in many of Prince's songs.

Prince's 26th birthday was celibrated with a gig at First Avenue that showcased new material. "All Day, All Night", along with "Roadhouse Garden" and "Our Destiny" were all premeired at this performance. The 3 songs were later worked on in the studio and "All Day, All Night" was eventually given to Jill Jones for her 1987 self-titled album. Her album version is very close to Prince and the Revolution's live take.

In my opinion, Purple Rain is the best edit project ever. Prince was a great editor and along with his team of Al Magnoli, Susan Rogers, etc., they've produced a great project. The film, album, the singles, and even the tour was well put together and well-edited . I mentioned the tour because Prince and The Revolution could the Purple Rain Tour around the world and waited a little longer to release another album. The film was edited and done well because of it we have these deleted scenes that's in high demand for release (which I think is gonna make the movie better). Just imagine if any of this stuff would have ever been extended and released during that time. Even now, the extended version/alternate mixes of these songs from the album and outtakes from the album are in high demand for release. Even those deleted scenes are in high demand for release. This was a well-edited album, film, and tour.

I totally know what you mean. I'm listening to the uncut version of Darling Nikki 2:46 min where it's cut and as wicked and sick as the part that's cut is, I mean that part drives me crazy, I understand how it would not have worked in the movie and how cutting to the humping/bumping scene is needed for the cut. I wish there could have been just a bit more of something, but I think that's what a good movie does it makes you want to see and hear more, ask questions.

Right! Those songs on the album were well edited, it's kinda sad knowing that these other mixes didn't make it. I mean, Computer Blues is a prime example! The alternate mix of that, how that would have fit on the album. SMH!! Those recordings were great! With all of the info that I know now about Purple Rain the movie and album, sometimes it's hard listening and looking at them because both of them extended would have been tight. All I can do is shake my head whenever I see the theatrical trailor for the film. That movie would have been even better with those deleted scenes. Imagine Prince performing G-Spot and Electric Intercourse, the fight scene at Apollonia 6's rehearsal, the barn scene, and even those little scenes like Morris bringing flowers to Apollonia would have made the movie better. I would have brought more light to the film. This is why we need this stuff to finally get officially released! Imagine hearing the extended version of Purple Rain?! It will help show why this movie, album, and tour was so great. The Purple Rain project is something special and even those related side projects was cool also. Plus, some of that material does work well with the film.

The original Vanity 6 version of this song has the same basic lyrics that appears on Apollonia 6, but it includes Prince singing "Come on, kiss the gun, guaranteed 4 fun," as well as some miscellaneous background vocals. The song ends with a scream from Prince, as if he were an unwilling victim of Vanity's firearm. The instrumentation is unpolished and clean sound of the final Apollonia 6 version. Planned for Purple Rain, this song was taped during the benefit concert for the Minnesota Dance Theatre company at the First Avenue, August 3rd 1983
However, he put the song aside when he came up with "The Beautiful Ones" (recorded on September 20th 1983), clearly a much more outstanding song in every way.

GREAT TOPIC!!

I was listening to the P.R. era stuff this week also and I thought ... this has to be some of his top stuff he has put out. And all the other songs, what a massive catalog of material output for the proteges.

I was listing to Blue Limousine... and even though it was A6 singing.. the music is THE MINNEAPOLIS SOUND created from Prince. Brilliant for that time and I love this song.

Would love to here P do this live back in the day.

"Vibrator" is a hilarious number that is essentially Vanity's ode to her battery-operated sex toy. This classic Vanity 6 track was recorded in the summer of 1983 in preparation for their second album. It utilizes a drum machine and synth bassline while featuring Prince as a female storekeeper who eventually, after trying Jill Jones' store, sells Vanity her much needed batteries for her "body massager."
