TRIBUTE/COVER ALBUMS

I personally love tribute/cover records - I have 3 Prince ones; 'Controversy - A Tribute To Prince', 'SPIN MAGAZINE - Purplish Rain' and Dump's 'That Skinny Motherfucker With The High Voice'.

Purplish Rain
is good fun, I dig it - Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings doing Take Me With U is amazing!

Controversy - A Tribute... has a few super boring covers and odd choices to do, but Stina Nordenstam doing Purple Rain is golden! D'Angelo doing She's Always In My Hair is pretty cool too.

That Skinny Motherfucker With The High Voice is one of my favourite albums of ALL TIME! Dump is SO fantastic (not just on this record). But yeah, this is an absolutely bullshitly good record! He picked ALL perfect songs to do and made each of them SO good. I LOVE 1999, Erotic City, Another Lonely Christmas, Raspberry Beret, How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore, A Love Bizarre. I love all of them. It's great.

Point is though; if you have one, what's your favourite? Also, tell me about more of them if you know of some.

smile

i have 'if i was prince', a collection of dance music (?) artists...the only artist name i remember is peaches...it's alright, but i haven't listened to it more than a couple of times: and those a long time ago.

also have 'purplish rain'...excellent. especially mariachi el bronx version of 'i would die for you' which, dare i say, i like better than the original.

and 'that skinny motherfucker with the high voice'...again, just an awesome album. i would listen to this one even if i hated prince. there are some very clever and original re-imaginings on this one.

"Do Me, Baby: Austin Does Prince" was an awesome compilation from what I remember. Dah-Veed covering "Girls And Boys" and Johnny Goudie covering "Paisley Park" was awesome. I've met Johnny Goudie more than once and he is a huge Prince fan. If you ever have the chance to see him perform, ask him to cover "Little Red Corvette" for you.

I have 4:

  • "SPIN Presents Purplish Rain"
  • Bob Belden's Manhattan Rhythm Club: "Purple Rain"
  • Classic Metropolitan Orchestra: "Prince"
  • "Smooth Sax Tribute"

The Bob Belden CD wouldn't be so bad if it was instrumental. I don't really like the Sax CD.

The orchestra one: Meh.

The SPIN CD isn't bad.

I enjoyed this...

And its the only thing I'm familiar with. Somebody here suggested a "country & western" tribute, supposedly "Take Me With U" is a treat, I'm planning to track it down, it def looks interesting on paper nod

It defintiely is cool (in parts).

On the first disc; in I WOULD DIE 4 U "no need 2 beat u, no need 2 lie" lovely bit of norwegian mis-translation. smile

Symbolism is sort of a tribute album. Some of the tunes are just written by P, while the rest are covers. Maybe that's why I like it more than the various "Portuguese Monks' Didgeridoo Tribute to Prince" albums. I used to put the Symphonic tribute CD on to get my daughter to go to sleep. However, it just made her dance in her crib! smile
