Sure, I've seen some musicians "ruined" by drugs too, but I've seen far more end up ruined through alcohol! But, most musicians seem to make it through just fine. Keith Richards is still here. Paul Macartney is still here. David Bowie is still here......etc etc
And its not just "some" good music, but MOST good music. Just take a look at any of the "Top 100" albums of all time - I did it to prove a point on the org a few months ago. Using Rolling Stone's list, 95 of the albums in that list were from known drug-taking artists. I'll say that again - 95% That's a CLEAR majority. And you know what else, most of those guys are still with us today.
Furthermore, some of the most famous intoxicated deaths were in fact down to good old LEGAL alcohol. Jimi Hendrix - alcohol. John Bonham - alcohol. Billie Holiday - alcohol. And of the few musicians I can think of who did die from illiegal drugs (Janis Joplin, for example), nearly all of them have been from heroin overdoses.
But, anyway, you seem to think we have lost a lot more talent due to illegal drugs, so perhaps you can enlighten me?
The dangers of drugs are exaggerated beyond belief, all part of the propaganda and people get sucked in to it (or, at least, those that haven't tried drugs do - those that are experienced know about the bullshit because none of the scare stories actually reflect the reality). Both alcohol and tobacco are FAR more dangerous than ANY of the illegal drugs. Either of those two LEGAL drugs kill way more people than ALL of the illegal drugs combined.
Funny how people seem to trust their governments when it comes to drugs issues, yet seem suspicious of their government over anything else! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

There is a real distinction between the natural "drugs" and the man-made drugs. Pot or mushrooms will NOT harm you. I have NEVER seen somebody ruin their life with weed. I have had friends who I no longer associate with who became crackheads or junkies. It was sad to see how it turned out for them. Cocaine, while innocuous seeming at first, is very addictive. I've done my share, and I stopped. I didn't like where I saw it taking friends, and I could tell that if I didn't stop, I was going to develop a problem. Plus, it makes parties lame. A "certain" group of people will seem to disappear, doors are locked, and when they do make an appearance, they are all weird and paranoid-seeming.
To sum it up, don't do hard drugs and you will be just fine. I fear this has gone off topic and may be locked soon. I will try to prevent that by saying I really doubt Prince currently does any sort of hard drug or hallucinogens. The occasional joint, you bet. I have no proof for you, no candy. You either believe it or you don't. I'm just saying...

you haven't been listening to me, alcohol is a drug, tobacco is a drug, alcohol is by far the worst in terms of how many people drink it and how many lives it affects. Tobacco of course kills millions. Now, as far as any lists of "great drug albums", that may be your list but the guys I love did most of their best stuff clean. Bruce Springsteen has always been pretty clean barring some beer. Elvis in the early days was clean, Prince drank wine occasionally in the early days if sources are correct but was otherwise clean. The beatles did a few great albums before revolver, in fact, some people prefer the pre LSD albums. So maybe your heroes all did their music high, but mines did not at least not all the time. Sly Stone did some of his best music as a heroin addict, Marvin Gaye always had coke and marijuana at hand, I doubt if stevie was heavy into anything. So is the shit necessary? I don't think so, can it open up channels of creativity? I guess so. Anyway, for me, it's not the way. If you want to do it go ahead, I don't care or even know you. But for me, all the drug use gets in the way, it's the main reason I work alone.

good to see a few ppl brought up boozre and cancer sticks. i will never understand why they are legal when weed isn't. booze has killed so many ppl fucking up their livers and such and drunk driving. all the ppl who have died from smoking cigs. i don't understand why that shit is legal!!!
weed is harmless when compared booze! no hangover. i've driven home while coming off on pot. your even more alert then when sober. i would never think of driving drunk. but then again i barely ever drink anyway! i don't wear a cross?!!? i wear a prince symbol I When Prince's cum dries, diamonds are formed. no one tops prince in concert!

Dude, I got no problem with you or your views, let's just make that clear. But I certainly have been listening to you, hence my detailed responses.
Now, the list I was referring to wasn't a list of "great drug albums", it was the Top 100 albums of all time, according to RS (we all have our own idea of what the top 100 would be, but given that this is a popular list with all the usual subjects, it makes it relevant as it was, typically, mainstream).
Bruce was one of those on the list who was in the 5%, as was Stevie. People are free to enjoy the Beatles "pre-LSD" albums, however the concensus is that their best work came after their minds were "opened" and I certainly agree with that.
Also, I didn't say they were my musical heroes - again, I picked a "general" and "popular" list.
Is it necessary? Certainly not - and, in fact, when I'm in the studio, I'm rarely high (well, other than having had a spliff or 2). Same with performing live - generally, just a beer and a spliff, otherwise its just too difficult. I once had to do a gig whilst on some seriously strong LSD and I probably played only 6 of the 40 or so parts I had to play! So, I wouldn't recommend it - time and a place and all that.
Can it open up channels of creativity? Definitely - but, it won't suddenly turn you in to some musical genius, or make you better at what you do. All it can do is enhance certain charecteristics or make see/hear/feel things with a different perspective and perhaps make you think of something you may not have thought of straight. But, again, it won't provide you with anything more than the talent you have.
For you, you don't want it and that's fine - I would never encourage anyone to do anything they don't want to and, as I said before, its entirely a personal choice. For me, it works fine - I've smoked pot for 20 years and dabbled in other things too. But everything in moderation - I've never lost the plot, lacked motivation, lost a job, stolen anything, hurt anybody and I'm successful at what I do. Horses for courses, as they say - but be assured I don't view anybody as lacking in anything just because they choose not to do drugs and I don't think that people who do take drugs are superior in any way. Each to their own - live and let live
Peace ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I just asked my relative. A decent vaporizer cost about $100. I am told it is like a hooka without water. It is a small box with a heat element similar to a car cigarette lighter. You have a small glass bowl that you can place a small amount of your product; the glass bowl is attached to a very long clear vinyl tube. You place the bowl on the heat element. It causes your product to get very hot yet not burn. The oils and resins are then "vaporized" and you inhale those vapors. No smoke, no smell.
I wished my father who died of cancer was brave enough to defy the law and use cannabis. He felt it was wrong to "break the law". We had to spend a lot of money paying cash price for Marinol... the pharmaceutical synthetic Cannabis that costed 1000 times more than Marijuana on the streets, was not covered by insurance company (of course ) and not eligible to buy from cheaper Canada even doctor prescription. My family was stuck between a rock and a hard place..... and not just by the disease... the prescribed treatment and that state's stand on medicinal use Marijuana victimized and robbed our family. I used to go to pharmacy with my mom and I used my Visa card and she would use hers and we would each buy a half of a month's supply of Marinol. One month supply was I think more than $300. You are right about vapes, but you also attach a plastic bag at the end of the lil tube that comes out of the machine so the vape smoke (for lack of a better term) fills up in the balloon and you inhale from there. This allows you to not waste any of the thc molecules and it gives the air a little time to cool from being heated.
Sorry about your father, man. My dispensary's co-op is run by a guy who went through similar stuff with his mother and cancer. He runs his business almost in tribute to her given the circumstances. Pretty awful stuff, what the government's been allowed to do to cannabis. I think that if people truly could separate the stoner image from cannabis and they saw actually how many products in their lives could be made cheaper, faster, stronger, and better with hemp they would be more supportive. Not to mention if people saw just how sophisticated the industry is. Out here in California, THC comes in any fomr imaginable, ingested via any medium you could think of, and is available in doses that rise in increments to better tailor to a person's needs. There's no glorification of "drug lifestyle" or anything of the sort and the people involved in the industry tend to be some of the most compassionate people around.

This is a fascinating topic, one that really seems to divide fans. I think the division is based on the expectations of Prince, of maybe his moral compass or something. Yes, he's said in interviews that he doesn't do drugs. Then again, he's said a LOT of things in interviews that are fabricated.
This topic is mostly fascinating because of the results the experience had on Prince's career. I think they are positive results. I think Lovesexy is a better album than the Black Album in some ways, and I'm glad we can all listen to both to hear the before and after.
This same experience gave Ingrid Chavez her career with Prince, which lead to an album and a movie role...all because he tried X. Interesting isn't it? As I wrote in my original thread about this, I'd always thought it was Ingrid that gave Prince the X, not Cat. In fact, you'll notice Cat is missing from all reports, which implied (to me at least) that Ingrid was responsible.
It was strange and wonderful circumstance that allowed me to meet Cat, and I never expected her to be so cool and forthcoming. Her stories (and she had many) were not meant to be disrespectful or to inflate her ego. She was just sharing some amazing (and funny) experiences that she's lived. She volunteered the Ecstacy story because she'd heard it being reported wrong. Then again, she'd also told me how she read stories of her death and drug abuse, which bothered her.
I don't think Cat would have any problem with my telling the story, as long as I was getting it right.

Don't believe this marketing bullshit about "legal highs" - they have been found to be generally more dangerous than the illegal drugs they are trying to replace! People generally do not know what's in them (at least Ecstacy pills can be easily tested as to what they are made with and the effects of MDMA and its variants are well-known and documented).
The whole "facing your worst nightmare with illegal drugs" is scaremongering and just dodgy sales tactics. Furthermore, most "legal highs" don't produce the hit that people are looking for and, hence, people end up taking dangerous amounts.
If you want the feeling of Ecstacy, take ecstacy from a reputable source and, if possible, get it tested first. Legal highs can be anything from plant food to dodgy chemical by-products and shouldn't be trusted at all!
As for the "hangover for weeks" - you'd have to be taking the drug in high amounts and very frequently to get that sort of effect (and, of course, its different for each individual anyway). Usually, people who take E at a weekend party will get what they call the "Tuesday blues", as it takes a few days for the "downer" to kick in. But its usually not as bad as an alcohol hangover and some decent rest and good food will normally kick you back in to shape within 24 hours. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

another point is, prince has always been difficult to decipher, I mean the guy has put effort into being wierd and he succeeded. Remember the Bandstand appearance? How he had a way, even then, of alienating some, tittilating others but getting everyone's attention. It's really hard to tell what's for effect and what's real with Prince. He understood mythmaking, probably better than just about anyone this side of David Bowie. Prince could have just been toying with everyone with all the black/lovesexy stuff as he'd done many times before. He always seemed to be trying some new epiphany of one kind or other and after many incarnations, it's just rehash for us more jaded fans. For me, the albums just weren't as good as the previous several, in fact, not even close in my mind. What does the other stuff really matter, it just detracts from albums that didn't measure up to his earlier work. This is not to say that P didn't do the exstacy, I just think everything is played up and amplified. Also, I've said this many times, I have a hard time sleeping when a few girls scream over me, Prince, with that kind of stardom would have had a hard time staying grounded, anyone would have. I don't think his getting lost at certain points is different than what would happen to anyone. Has nothing to do with his character or lack of. I remember first hearing of Bruce Lee being a cannabis user, it just didn't seem possible that this health nut would ever do anything like it, but after maturing I was able to accept that Bruce was under such inhuman stress and that his temperament made it impossible to relax without something. Fame is a motherfucker.

I would've understood if some bubble gum pop artist apologized for the black album, and had tried to stop it's release, due to a X trip. But Prince using this excuse. PLEASE! Were talking about the KING OF SHOCK! Prince music was dark way before the black album. When the album was completed couldn't he have just destroyed it. But instead leaks out dark stories to the public, and pretend he's not going to release the album. The results - High demand for the album. The black album becomes a collector's item. Now that's what I call great marketing.

then there is the story that Prince really stopped the black album after WB told him that they would not do any promotion for it.

I imagine you're right to an extent, but as for me, sometimes I'll listen to some of the old stuff and hear with the 20+ years of life experience and hear the music differently, that's why I'm interested in this topic. I relistened to Bob George and was fascinated at the depth which I completely missed as a young man. I don't think the music is that great but the song as a whole is touched ever so slightly by Prince's demented genius. I forget in psychology what the id, ego and superego were each seperately designated as but I think the id and the ego are speaking to each other on this song hence "this is your conscience motherfucker". This is the kind of depth which white critics never give black artists credit for lyrically or conceptually. Fascinating to me.
