Prince and Chicken Grease

What's Prince's best use of chicken grease, whether on a record, live, or both? Lately I've been listening to a lot of Prince and the Revolution live stuff from the Purple Rain days, as well as Sheila E.'s band from the same tour, which had a similar Revolution-type sound to it, and that sound seems to be such a big part of what I love about it (as well as the drumming).

What are your favorite examples, old and new?

If this turns out to be a really lame thread, I apologize in advance.

I don't know that I've got a favourite example, but I know that I wish he would return to that style of playing. The flashy wankery his guitar work has evolved into over the past few years bores me.

True. I could take or leave the crappy bootleg studio version I have. But live, that song is something else.

So are we discussing examples of Prince's use of this technique?

^^^Yep, that's it! biggrin

I love that kind of funk in his music and would love to hear it back again. It seems to me like it's one of the many different components that went into building the Minneapolis Sound.

I love the line in Dead On It, as well as the one on La La La, He He Hee (they're very similar).

And I like this thread! biggrin

What is odd to me is that Undisputed is so opposite of chicken grease to me.

Exactly. I have no idea why he calls that out and then nothing really happens. There's like a 3-4 second motif being played that I assume is supposed to be chicken grease? LOL.

Prince don't even know.

I really like some of the chicken grease on Head at the "Birthday Show" at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. When he's doing his thing on the floor, that CG layin' just perfectly under the quiet groove! Love it!

As Efan said, this was a HUGE part of the Minneapolis Sound, and the Revolution brought it like no other. Some times I can go days of listening to nothing else but the Purple Rush series. Add a live Parade show in the mix here and there, and I'm good. Almost don't need anything else! His licks don't even sound like they did on 20Ten, and he's pretty much trying to emulate all that he was doing back in the glory days. I mean, there's a whole heap of stuff wrong with that CD, but that's for another thread!! lol

I've said it once, and I'll say it again...Prince NEEDS to have a rhythm guitarist for his band!!
