"Nelson" Genealogy
Prince was born "Prince Rogers Nelson." June 7, 1958
Has anyone ever done any genealogy on the last name "Nelson?"
I wonder how far back in history this last name is recorded. Does anybody know if "Nelson," is primarily an American name or does it have European ancestry?
I Love Prince's last name. Can we get 2gether

why do you need to know his genealogy? His last name probably came from people who had slaves. Slaves had the same last names as their masters if I'm not wrong. P.S.You are 40-something, get a life.

Correct and just about every Black-American born in the U.S., as well as those Blacks whose ancestors were born in the Caribbean (such as mine) and whose ancestors were slaves, have surnames of people who owned their ancestors at one time or another. Also, as slaves were sold, their surnames were often changed to that of each slave owner. The surnames of many Blacks, holds evidence of the history of slavery in America and throughout the Caribbean. [Edited 2/1/11 8:29am]

The surname Nelson goes back a looooong way. I was born in the town of Nelson in Lancashire, England. Named after Admiral Horation Nelson, one of the most famous names in British history http://en.wikipedia.org/w...unt_Nelson

Should be pretty easy to find out. Usually it comes down to finding out what county the parents were born in and finding birth and death info. And I'm pretty sure he has had cousins (first, second, third) that have traced that family tree over the past 25 years.
Considering New Orleans is considered the heartbeat of American music, Prince def. brought some of that pulse. Bob Dylan wrote about"going down Highway 61", which is a road that goes.... from New Orleans to Minnesota. And without that road, Prince's dad never would've made it to Minneapolis.
