First Prince Official Single Released on CD?

Hi all

When did Prince start releasing singles official on CD (NOT vinyl) and not re-releases? Was it from the Lovesexy Album?

The first manufactured Prince CD single was the promo of "If I was your girlfriend".

The first commercial release was "Alphabet St".

I have vague memories of attending a record fair circa 1990 and seeing a Japanese 3" cd of "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man", including the remixes of "Hot Thing". It was in a longbox package. Does it exist or did I imagine it?

There was a cassette version of this packaged in a longbox.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

In 10 hours your 21 year old vague memory became 99% certain lol

Definitely no CD. Just vinyl and cassette.

As posted above "If I Was Your Girlfriend" (1 track edit version) was the 1st promo, and "Alphabet St" was the first commercially released.

I bought the Alphabet St CD Single when it came out and it was a smaller size CD single than the average CD.

That was the first I saw of P on CD Single - up til then I was buying all 12".
