Prince's Country Song

I asked this on another thread and it got ignored. hrmph

Some folks sitting in front of me at the 12/29 concert mentioned that

Prince recorded a country song under the pseudonym.

I can't remember the name, though.

Has anyone heard of this?

He gave a song to Kenny Rodgers called "You'r e My Love." It was credited to (IIRC) Joey Coco.

http://princevault.com/in...re_My_Love

and there is "Right the Wrong" from C & D that many call a country song. And some say "Still Waiting" was a county song.

But as far as I know there is no country song that he recorded and released under a different name

Interesting...

In the other thread, it stated that there is not a circulating copy of the Prince-recorded version.

Do ya'll know if that is still the case?

Also - I kind of think that this wasn't the song that was referenced by my concert friends, because this guy had a recorded copy of it. I don't know how he obtained it, but he told me that I would be able to google the pseudonym and find it. I want to say the pseudonym had "Billy" or "Bubba" in it.

lol

When Planet Earth came out, I said that could be the first Prince song ever played at a NASCAR event. lol

He also wrote a song for an artist by the name of Deborah Allen and if i am not mistaken, that song was "Telepathy",which he later was rerecorded by Sheena Easton..

"Purple Rain" has chords and arranged with a country feel...

"Take me with you" and "Raspberry Beret" both were arranged with a country feel in mind, that is why many country artist have recorded them both...

Since I haven't posted before, I'm not sure if anyone is interested in my thoughts on this, but here goes... I agree that "The One U Wanna C" could pass as a country song. But it seems to me that many of Prince's songs could be classified as country if they were performed by someone else. For example, couldn't you make a case for Dirty Mind as a potential country album, or at least the A-side? I'm not just thinking of Mitch Ryder’s cover of “When You Were Mine” or what someone like Crystal Gayle could do with “Gotta Broken Heart Again.” Take the title track and "Do It All Night," slow them down a bit, drop out the keyboards, add some fiddle and honky-tonk piano. Wouldn't you then have two somewhat bizarre country love songs, a bit like Jimmy Buffett’s “Why Don’t We Get Drunk (and Screw)" but minus the alcohol? As for the B-side, watch Lily Allen’s video for “Not Fair,” and tell me you can't imagine a country version of “Head,” sung from the woman's perspective.

Yes, I know this is a silly exercise (and has nothing to do with the original poster's question). Coming up with a wildly different arrangement isn't too far from writing a brand new song. Also, country music rarely has lyrics as sexually explicit as Prince's music did before his religious conversion. Perhaps only one or two tracks on Dirty Mind, if any, would work as mainstream country songs without drastic changes. However, I honestly believe that whether a song is considered country depends in no small measure on who's performing it. A lot of what I hear on country radio today could be played on top 40 stations if not for the singer's regional accent, and I'm not just talking about crossover artists like Taylor Swift. Of course, this is nothing new: take the yodels out of certain Jimmie Rodgers songs and you have straight-up Delta blues. If Charley Pride performed any Prince song, I'm pretty sure it would sound like a country song. (Maybe he has, in which case I'd love to hear it.) The thought of Charley Pride or Johnny Cash singing "Sister" may be disturbing, but it's hard to imagine that song sounding any weirder as a country song than it already does. And exactly what genre is it now, anyway?

Maybe we can persuade some country star to do an album of random Prince covers and see how that turns out. I would certainly give it a listen. On the other hand, if Prince went down to Nashville and recorded an album of classic country standards, I suspect he couldn't help but make them sound pretty funky. cool

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.

I forgot about that one!

First of all - I cannot believe the crazy stuff Prince agreed to do on this show!!

Secondly - I don't think it's the song I'm looking for. I'm starting to

think my concert-mate had it wrong or someone would've come up with

it by now.

Take Me With U has been country-fied by someone on the 'Austin Does Prince' CD - I really like it and it shows how versatile/universal Prince's songwriting can be.

I don't know, modern country music is very poppish but I don't really consider it country music. Maybe some of Prince's songs could be considered modern country but I don't think anything he has done is similar to "real" country music.

I'm not joking when I type this, I would absolutely love to hear what Prince would come up with if he locked himself up with some Hank Willams and Merle Haggard records and had to record an album using simple bass, drum and guitar parts with some fiddles (not violins), steel guitars and honky tonk piano featured prominently. It might end up a carwreck but it would certainly be something different. razz
