"Cause and Effect" revisited...

Okay, I haaaaaated this song when it first came out...

...but for some reason I burned it to a CD and listened to it in my car a couple weeks ago, and ever since it hasn't come out of the player. I am grooving to this song all over the place. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Okay, so the tune of the verses sound a bit too close to Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" for comfort (and that's only a problem because it makes me want to hear that song, which is killer), and the chorus is cheesy, and the "HEY"s are a bit much, etc. etc. ...

But I don't care. I love it. The guitar rocks. I can even deal with the lyrics. I love the "LADIES AND GENTLEMAN!" and the "CAUSEANDEFFECT!" background vocals. I'm even digging the "I am here...where are you?"

My favorite part is where he name-drops many of the songs from 20TEN. It makes me wish this song was on that disc, somewhere.

...thoughts?

I liked it then and I like it now. I like when Prince does his rock/funk/progish extended pieces.

And I was truly hoping we would get a 20Ten deluxe with Cause and Efffect, Hot Summer, and Rich Friends added to it. Not too mention the addition of extended versions of some 20Ten tracks. Oh well. I've made my own compilation of non-album tracks from Lotusflow3r to now. That will suffice.cool

"Hot Summer" is incredibly basic and simple, but kinda fun to my ears. "Rich Friends" on the other hand is a total snooze-fest. An embarrassing one, at that. And as for "Purple and Gold," wow. I will never, ever listen to that again. EVER.

I do agree that "Cause and Effect" is as corny as Orville Redenbacher...but I can deal with corny Prince, as long as it has a fun element to it, which to me this one does. Shoot, "Right the Wrong" is a personal favorite! So yeah, corny is not a deal-breaker for me.

(CAUSEANDEFFECT!) wink

Agreed. I don't mind some corny Prince. It's cool. As long as there's some cool, fun, interesting musical things going on I can overlook "other" stuff. wink

I do like some of his corny music....Everybody Loves Me..while extremely cheesy to a fault...but fun intended, I did like The Morning After...reminds me of Teacher Teacher...even though the lyrics are still meh....not sure whats going on with his recent songwriting but it is so loose and not tight and inspired as it once was....however it is still there on some tracks.

I hate that due to generally poor or (more often) non-existent liner notes for most of Prince's songs (even the album tracks) over the last decade, I never know who plays on what tracks.

Alguy

It's still wasted potential. Somehow, it was a good tune, but the energy felt flat. It should have been a great, tumbling rock anthem, but it never really took off.

I did not like this song much when it came out. Nowadays it really grew on me. I still like 2010 but this is not as strong as that material in my opinion. I think it is a great non album cut.
