I can't give it up for Laydown. It's a mega-dose of the bad Prince. Larry Graham approved replacement curse words? Check. Early 90's West Coat rap style? Check. Lame play it safe multi-instument solo by numbers? Check. Shaft style female backing vocals that are meant to be a bit funny, but really just annoy? Check. Song about absolutely nothing and by nothing I especially mean nothing sexy, or real? Check again. Bragging while being lame? Check. This one is not quite as cornball as "Sadomasichistic Groove", but still light years behind "She's Always In My Hair". Another strong example of how powerless and dry Prince's music sounds without Lisa Coleman.

Wrong! Check

Seems pretty accurate to me.

I love that track. Love the funk rock sound of it. He could do a lot with it played live, especially during the guitar solo part. The beginning of that song reminds me of Queen's "We Will Rock You" chant. Love it.

Yes, Laydown is a "pump-up the volume high energy" track. As far as the W2A shows, I absolutely loved it. I was at the 12/18 and 12/29 shows. I'm going again on 2/7, especially since this seems to be the last show of the W2A concert series for New York City area, and there hasn't been any further information for any added shows in that area.

You're kidding right? Without Lisa Coleman? Where's the falling on the floor laughing my ass off emoticon when you need it?lol He seemed to survive all these years without W&L, and not to put W&L down, but they became known because of Prince, not the other way around. They are known to new Prince fans because of the Purple Rain movie, because I doubt a truckload of fans are running out and buying any new albums of W or L without Prince or that W&L will ever reach the same legendary status of Prince. Don't mean to sound harsh, but Prince was around long before W&L joined his band, so it's not like W&L made Prince. W&L became known because of Prince during the Revolution days and the Purple Rain movie. That's just about it. I"m not saying they didn't make some pretty good songs while they were with him, but all three are not joined at the hip and have moved on.

On another note, as far as "LayDown" I like the funk rock sound of it, and the energy in the song, but to each their own. shrug

U R again right. For some reason a lot of peeps on this site credit W&L for Prince success and feel that after they left his music suffered.. Nevermind his first five albums were without them & a one man band effort. Except maybe a brief keyboard & backing vocal. Plus SOTT (Again without them except a few backing vocals was Prince alone again) is heralded still after all these years his best album...

Define 'classic'.

the main highlight of the album, a fan favorite, a live staple, a song that could be included on a compilation, a song that brings something new/fresh to the Prince sound, etc.

Nope .... Beginning Endlessly is cool

Laydown is a "fan classic" imo.

Great song. Not in my Prince songs top 20 though.
