LAYDOWN: Do You Consider It a CLASSIC??

Yes? No? Why? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Can you dance to it? Does it bore you? Do you think it will be a classic for future tours? Do you think it's weak material for the vault? etc

I think it's catchy, fun but throw away,

a nod to a current trend, that Lil Wayne vibe.

Not a true original Prince vibe.

The musical structure is commonplace, cliche.

not a instant classic... could be a classic in the time to come. I like the song and its his best attempt to sound "current"

Define 'classic'.

I think it's the most misused term when speaking about music nowadays.

the main highlight of the album, a fan favorite, a live staple, a song that could be included on a compilation, a song that brings something new/fresh to the Prince sound, etc.

None of those, but I like it and it could be fun to hear live now and then.

Like many new Prince songs, it COULD be a classic...if only he would make it come alive/memorable by making it a live staple. There are numerous Prince songs that aren't "hits" per se, but have become classic because of his live renditions. "Laydown" would fit this mold very well.

"New Power slide...."

The music is fine, almost great other than the percussion. The lyrics are pretty bad. I kind of feel the same way about it as I did with Face Down. His lyrics have been lacking for years, but he has always had the incredible ability to make a lame lyric sound important. I remember when I heard Style from Emancipation, my first thoughts were that he never should've had that Mayte in the shower line, since I figured they would be divorced within a year or two, which wasn't that far off from what happened.

I think it is a classic. It's one of my favorite tracks on 20ten. Matter of fact, Prince opened with this song at the Izod on December 15th. I was out my chair instantly and was like "you need to lay down" headbang

"You need to laydown and let me show you how we do this thing up in funky town. From the heart of Minnesota here come the purple Yoda guaranteed to bring the dirty new sound! Come on, now!"

definately a jam. I was at Izod on the 15th when he played this opening cut...from that point forward everyone was on their feet. The guitar ripped.....

I like the song, escpecially the "What? What?," background vocals.

It is still my least favorite from the cd. I Love "2010."

Then, I don't consider 'Laydown' is any of those things.

For me, 'classic' is inevitably linked to the passing of time.

Only when a song, after quite some time, keeps on being a staple or keeps on being a reference item both for the composer, fellow musicians and fans alike, should be considered a classic.

That's why ancient Greek and Roman opuses keep on being taken into account, because they've become classic.

The adjective -for me- doesn't match at all with a song released less than a year ago.

Fuck no. I like it, but comparing it to Purp's real classics would be all kinds of wrong.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I may be the only person who thinks this song is not all that. Yes, using an old phrase, but... the song is lacking something and I can't put my finger on it. It is just an attempt to be up to date with a lot of crap that is out there now. Prince is above this, really... in my opinion. It is catchy, fun.... but it ends there. It is like a line I heard from an old 80's movie called "Eddie and the Cruisers". The guy tells some kid shredding on his guitar that it sounds fine, dazzling... but that's all. At the club, I would enjoy it... then go home and forget about it.

This is how I feel about this song. It doesn't have that "classic" stay with you feel. Prince is better off with the other material on 20Ten as far as a "classic" sound. I think " Future Soul Song" has more of a classic feel... as well as "Walk in Sand". These are the first songs I think of when 20Ten is pulled out and into rotation.

On the other hand, I don't really think Prince is looking to have a "classic" type song anymore. Many may disagree, but it's just my opinion. I think he is searching deeper within himself and is less worried about whether a few hundred people on the org thinks any of his latest songs would be considered "catchy or classic". We must remember that he is a true artist, and that any true artist is always on a journey, searching for a perfect sound. Just like a painter who is trying to find the best way to interpret their own visions onto canvass. Like Prince said a few years ago, he is searching and writing as a way to help him get to his ultimate place in life. A self help type of thing, I guess. I agree with him. Annnnnnd... if a few funky little purple yoda's want to follow him on this ride, then so be it. I, for one, have bought my lifetime pass. smile

No.

A classic to me would be something you could show your friends, something you could have playing loudly anyplace, anytime.

The purple Yoda line turns this song into a guilty pleasure.

I enjoy it in the privacy of my home, but I'm embarrassed to think someone might hear me listening to 'from the heart of Minnesota, here come the purple Yoda.'

Too silly to have to justify.

Not at all. Prince has seen some Star Wars, appreciates the Yoda character enough to name check him.

That is cool.

Hell no. If this is a classic then we all have shortsighted views. And look, there can be no deep dissapointment where there is no deep love, and I have loved Prince's music through the years. This entire album is like a ship that has no idea where it wants to port, so none of it's wind is favorable. Prince needs a vision, then maybe he can execute something worth while. So classic, not in the least. Go back and listen to a classic, and you will quickly dismiss this song as any competition to the title.

We are all so full of doody here
