Yes and no. He has grown in style and technique over the years, but he has become more sloppy too.

There's that boombox recording from 1976, where he is really slaying the acoustic guitar, so he has always played well. Prince held back during the 80s. Maybe he thought it was more about the tune and not the crazed playing.

With the comeback in 2004 he had something to prove.

Everytime he says that in a concert, I just nod and say, "yep, go right on".

And as far as Prince's guitar skills go, of course he's gotten better over time, though he's always been a great player!

There comes a point in the practice of an instrument, that once you pass that point, what distinguishes you from others is simply a matter of personal preference honestly. Which is why I absolutely detest "best guitarist" based questions or articles, or whatever. After this point, you really can't say so and so is a better guitarist than so and so; but you can absolutely say I THINK so and so is a better guitarist than so and so. In short, I THINK he's the one of the best guitarists in the history of the instrument, and he's one of the top players in the world today, and yes he is my favorite player.
