Wait, why'd you switch to "Eye No"? That's a completely different subject! And I don't understand what you meant by "use wikis". I'm giving you Prince lore beyond the wiki. confused

I was just saying that the sample used in "I No" and the samples used in "Delirious", "Lady Cab Driver", and "Pop Life" don't come from the same sound effect compilation. And, also, that we shouldn't need to search prince.org using Google to find all those pieces of information.

I do think the sound effects from the 1999 album and Around the World in a Day might be from the same sound effects compilation. I could look through what I have, I do have the sound effects library that a lot his mid 90's stuff uses (like Gold, Exodus, etc)

i keep hearing that woman's scream at the beginning of "We March" in movies all the time.

didn't hear it that much before but in recent years, in every single movie where there are

people screaming or disasters happening you hear that same sample.

also the sound of the 'elevator doors closing' that is used through the entire gold experience

album is popping up in many places on tv lately.

so i guess most of the sampled noises on The Gold Experience come from the same source

of a samples disc or something that is widely used in movie production?

It's probably all in "Hollywood Edge" collection. You'll find all kinds of familiar sound effects in there from late 70's and early 80's movies.

Itunes even has it, it's a huge colllection.

The "whoosh" sound effect used in the NPG Operator segues on the Gold Experience shows up in an episode of X-Files.

More reasons why Prince was a jerk or asshole back then was because he was sleepy and hungry...

(He hardly ate and he barely slept -> all having effects on temperment & mood) cool

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

From what I've learned from reading and talking to people that worked with Prince, he is always getting this and that newest sound effects collection (as well as instrument voices and samples), and will often lay down the tracks for a song, and then leave, and tell the engineer to put on a sound effect, or a certain edit that Prince will then check when he comes back.

I think companies send him stuff as promotion too.

I started hearing radio stations use Prince's mid 90's sound effects in the early 2000's. So I think when a new library comes out, it is expensive, and movie studios and people like Prince might get them, but then years later they water it down and resell it to more common audio endpoints.

I've heard it as "starfish" since day 1 (no "& coffee" though).

Also, in Purple Medley, during Purple Rain, he sings "I never meant to cause you any sorrow; I never meant to cause you any paint."

Meh.

When all of a sudden the music stops. You hear yelling, and booing, and throw the bum out.

It fucks up the flow of the song. I always turn down the volume during that part of the song.

They say that's audio from the rolling stones concert of Prince geting booed off stage.

When you groovin at a party, you stop dancing when that part comes up.

It's not.

It's from a Sony sound effects library. I came across it in '97 when I was editing video for porn companies.

This is a fun thread!

Some minor things many people here probably already know:

1)The cassette and CD versions of "Still Waiting" on the Prince album clip the intro...so far as I know, the original vinyl is the only place to hear the complete song.

2)Just before the fade out on "Mountains," Prince whispers the word "starvation"

3)Purely my own observation, but I always thought it was interesting that Lovesexy starts with the sound of fire burning and the song "Eye No," with the word "No!" shouted throughout until the beginning of "Alphabet St." But t the album ends with water running on the song "Positivity," which says the word "yes" repeatedly throughout. Given the situation with the Black Album, I always thought this was a subtle metaphor for going from fire (Hell) and negativity to water (rebirth) and positivity. And, on the original vinyl and cassette, the literal turning point in these themes was the chanted "God is love..." part from "Anna Stesia." Or I'm just reading too much into it...

I agree that this is a good idea for a thread.

I heard about the Still Waiting vinyl LP vs CD timings just recently - I had never noticed before. Thankfully, someone posted a nice lossless rip of the vinyl cut.

Interesting observations about Lovesexy.

Very cool read on Lovesexy.

the song "Purple Rain" was actually written by his father to him when he left the family (when Prince was 8). Prince just changed some lyrics here and there. Examples:

"Baby I could never steal you from another" was originally "Baby I could never steal you from your mother" and "I never wanted to be your weekend lover" was originally "I never wanted to be your weekend father"

Listen to the song with just those two changes and you'll see what I mean. The song is already great, but knowing this fact makes it even more haunting and beautiful. Listen and believe.

1) Some people ask what the meaning is of the backwards message at the end of Darling Nikki. "Hello, how are you? I'm fine cuz I know the lord is coming, coming soon." This was done at the time to poke fun at critics who suggested Prince's music contained backmasked messages depicting Satanic or other occult beliefs. The joke was that when those folks would go and reverse the message, they were greeted by someone saying that they indeed loved God.

2) Some newer fans might not know about the NPG All Stars. Levi Seacer Jr took over the role of President at NPG Records when he left the NPG touring/recording lineup. During this tenure, it was planned that Prince would undertake an NPG All Stars tour. This tour, in essence, would be similar to what ended up as the Newpower Soul Festival (not really much of a festival in the end, rather just 3 acts touring together). The idea never actually got off the ground, but it was presumed that the roster would include acts like George Clinton, Carmen Electra, The NPG, Madhouse, Mavis Staples, MPLS... Essentially, if you saw it on the 1800 New Funk album, it was intended to be on the NPG All Stars tour. Shortly after, this and all projects at the time involving Levi were canned when he was ousted from the camp for (allegedly) fucking one of Prince's girlfriends (Carmen Electra). As Miko learned previously, it ain't cool to fuck with Prince's women.

3) The song "Strange Way (Of Saying I Love U)" was written and recorded as the result of a spat between Lisa Coleman and Prince during the time they shared an apartment together early in Lisa's tenure in the band. Their fight ended up in Lisa leaving and Prince writing and recording the song by the time she returned. It was thought as being Prince's way of apologizing.

4) Robin Power (the very tall, built woman playing as Morris' girlfriend in Graffiti Bridge) didn't disappear after the film. She actually stuck around Paisley Park for a few years after doing mostly choreography for videos and performances.

5) Sources from the bootleg company that released them stated that the source for the City Lights soundboards and the Studio Nights outtakes was none other than Bobby "Z" Rivkin.

6) Michael Bland once described his tenure for Prince as being wildly unpredictable. Typically, they would be called in to lay tracks for songs only to never actually know of or hear about the songs again. One such example was "Baby Knows" whose drum track was recorded at least 3 years prior to its release and intended for a completely different song (what song it was intended for is unknown, but Michael Bland stated it was not "Baby Knows").

7) Songs known to have been recorded long before their release:

"Raspberry Beret" - Recorded 1982, released 1985

"We Can Funk" - Recorded 1983, released 1990

"The Question of U" - Recorded 1985, released 1990

"Can't Stop This Feeling I Got" - Recorded (originally) 1986, released 1990

"Strange Relationship" - Recorded 1982, released 1987

"Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic" - Recorded 1988, released 1999

"The Max" - Recorded 1988, released 1992

"The Dance" - Recorded 2003, released 2006

"Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderful" - Recorded 2003, released 2009

"Guitar" - Recorded 2003, released 2007

(This list only comprises songs which were actually demo'd several years prior to their release. Songs like "Baby I'm A Star" and "Purple Rain" do not have known studio versions though they were known to have been written several years prior to their release. This also does not include songs released as part of a compilation or The Black Album. This list is incomplete and just off the top of my head.)

8) The songs "Solo" and "Strays of the World" were intended for a musical. The story of the song "Solo" is here:

http://youoffendmeyouoffe...th-prince/

9) The song "When Doves Cry" was written about his relationship with Susan Moonsie, member of Vanity 6. Prince and Susan had been dating for several years by that point. "She's Just A Baby" was also written about her as well. Prince often dated more than one woman at a time and more than one coworker at a time. While dating Susan, Prince was also romantically linked with Jill Jones, Vanity, and Susannah Melvoin.

10) The original name for Prince's female side project before becoming Vanity 6 was: Vagina and the Hookers.

Is there any new evidence that it was recorded in 2003? If i remember correctly, TCI and TS were placed in 2001 on NPGMC's official discography, seemingly indicating that all the tracks (including the alternate versions of many songs and The Dance) were recorded in 2001 or before.

I've seen the 2003 date mentioned a few times on here by fans, but I think it's just an assumption and there's no proof of it at all.

It actually sounds like an Emancipation-era track to me.

Just caught this - the term "soulpsychedelicide" most likely comes from the song "Time Has Come Today" by The Chambers Brothers (1968).

Towards the end (it's a loooooooooooooong song), he says "My soul has been psychedelicized!"

In the vinyl version of Exodus...(segue between "Get Wild" and "DJ Gets Jumped") When Tommy Barbarella askes Michael B how is he gonna drive with that masked on, Michale B replies "The same way I saw yo momma last night" to which Tommy replies "Fuck that!"

In the CD version it's edited to "Same way I saw yo momma" ("last night" was taken out) and Tommy's "Fuck" is taken out too to just "that"....I thought there was something wrong with my cd when I first heard it. hmmm
