"Little Red Corvette"-the week it peaked at number 6 in May 1983

From the Billboard Hot 100 Billboard Chart Archives

week of May 21, 1986 when LRC peaked on the Hot 100

1. Let's Dance-David Bowie

2. Beat It-Michael Jackson

3. Flashdance-Irene Cara

4. Overkill-Men At Work

5. She Blinded Me With Science-Thomas Dolby

6. Little Red Corvette-Prince

7. Solitaire-Laura Branigan

8. Jeopardy-Greg Kihn Band

9. My Love-Lionel Richie

10. Time (Clock of My Heart)-Culture Club

I think "Synchronicity" by The Police was selling pretty well too.

Look at the diversity of styles on the chart that week.

Now look at what you have now and tell me that music is as good now as it was then.

Damn shame what has happened.

Let's Dance is just as good

and as I've said many times, the "charts" died in 2004 (the illness was diagnosed in 1998)...

What's fascinating to me about the charts back then was just what someone said a few posts ago, the diversity of musical styles and artists that had a CHANCE to be heard. There was no Internet, youtube, so main way people learned about other kinds of music and get turned on by it was through radio. It's easy to take for granted now, but the single "Little Red Corvette" was a major hit that transformed his fan demographics and the way he was seen by even the most narrow-minded tastemakers. I think this song even more than "1999" gave him the classic pop/rock song that til this day he hasn't topped.

Secondly, "Let's Dance" is pure eighties in its production, pretty much all those songs did, but Nile Rogers doesn't get even recognition for producing great pop artists, especially for someone who came uop during the disco era, and was disco died, he had enough savvy to go into producing artists that had artistic credibility. Lastly, Lionel Richie, is a paradox, because for a guy that is so soulful and came from a great funk band like The Commodores, his music in the eighties was so devoid of soulfulness, he made (no disrespect) corny rock bands sound like James Brown.

and don't forget "Time (Clock Of The Heart)" music that's one of the best songs of the 80s.

Also, culturally, "Little Red Corvette", paved the way along with other videos by Black artists, for more Black artists to be on MTV. Ironically, since 2004, Prince has been anti-MTV, starting with his interview with Tavis Smiley and his press interviews around this time.
