7 samples Tramp or replays Tramp?

The song 7 is said ton have sampled Tramp. But to my ears it doesn't sound like a true sample, but a replaying of the riff and then inserted into 7.

?

It's considered a sample because the writer, Lowell Fulsom, cleared it and is credited in the album notes.

On the single, on certain remixes, Prince is only credited.

I always wondered why he'd even clear it as a sample. It's such a standard bass line which has been used so many times in many different songs.

Off the top of my head, Michael jacksons 'who is it?' uses the same bass line.

Who is it is different. The rhythm pattern is similar, but the progression in the bassline is different.

Does princes baseline follow the tramp progression identically? I thought it just stayed on the 'A'.
