I don't see it as a song about his child, but I do love it.

All of my life I've never wanted anyone like I wanted U

Really? Even when reading the lyrics you still don't see it?

He never explictly said it was about his son's death, but he did allude to it around the time the album came out. As well as Come Back from The Truth cd.

Yeah, I do see it. Sorry; I should clarify that I know what you mean and I wasn't trying to argue that point. I love the song, but it's very sad in that context so I like to think of it as a relationship song, which I guess is kinda silly.

It is a beautiful song. Sometimes wish it was a slightly lower register, but that's just quibbling. Glad he shared it with us. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

Its a masterpiece 4 the late Gregory Nelson.. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

The production is leaning that direction maybe. Not a song for the uninitiated, but to those who know the background it is a significant composition. He rarely sings about subjects so highly personal as this one. Maybe he is awkward in this arena, so he avoids it, but he might benefit by writing more close to the bone. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I loved this song long before I found out it was about his son, but once I did find out it made it more heartfelt for his son who would've been 14 years old this year. I wonder had he lived what would P be like today music-wide!!!!

Too many painful memories for me associated with that song.

I kind of go back and forth with this song. I do think it is one of the better songs on Newpower Soul but on most other albums it would be viewed as filler. I think it's great that for once he did a song with semi personal lyrics which as someone else pointed out is a bit of a rarity for him.
I think a spare piano and voice version of this could be quite good.

This song is about his late son? I thought it just another great 'I-miss-you' love song... I checked Prince Vault, and they say the same thing, so I guess. Wow, new info all time...
Kinda sad Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

This song is not about his son dying. Not at all. Neither is Wasted Kisses. You're imposing false meaning upon lyrics which isn't there and its not an interpretation issue either. You're reading it completely wrong. A quick glance at the words should show this, and even Prince wouldn't be so crass to mix and match his emotions over his son's death with the regret of a failed relationship. Some people just want this guy on his knees, spilling his soul. It will never happen. He very rarely gives fodder to the psychos who want a piece of his pain. The only released track which explicitly refers to the death is Comeback, which Prince himself spoke of in an interview around the time. [Edited 1/16/11 3:45am]

The song "Come Back" makes me cry every time I hear it. It's sooooo sad and heartfelt. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I've always thought it was a song about the death of his child too, but eh, what do I know? RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

So you believe that Prince, who has spent a pretty significant chunk of his career writing in metaphor, can only broach the subject of death explicitly? When he sings...
Wrong or right the reason U're taken from my embrace
he's talking about Death. And not just talking about it - but implying that he's questioned a God who would take a child from a father, and received no reply.
To me, it's obvious that this song is about the loss of a longed-for, hoped-for loved one in the most awful, permanent way that loss can occur. And, knowing the history, I don't read "failed romance" in there, at all. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I do think the track is super formulaic and soppy, but I still really like it and think it's really well crafted and commercial - could've easily been a single IMO.
