Honestly, I just think that when people are texting, it is quicker and easier.

Prince fans crack me up... they think he invented EVERYTHING! lol

He's not responsible for that. If anything he got it from the field of journalism, where reporters since the days of writing pads are used to develop their own personal short/code writing system.

I'm still surprised how my mom (who's a journalist) can out-text me any day when texting me one the mobile. Sometimes I can hardly understand what she's writing because of the way she shortens words.

And sometimes I can hardly understand Prince, but that's not because of his text style, but what he says in between the lines.

People will think you're stupid even if you use it in Prince forums.

Do you think you're 'cool' because of using those stupid so-called Princebonics? Latest news: you aren't. By using those in a forum one only shows how little personality one has.

This topic arises every once in a while amongst newbies.

Prince didn't invent ANYTHING in this regard.

Most (if not all) of that language comes from way back: telegrams, cables, such.

He was doing it as far back as '79....

Who did it before that?

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Not everyone who uses text messages is "versed" in Prince-speak.

The more attention that Prince received, the more people went back to check out his back catalogue of music and discovered his weird shortcuts for words....his relevancy in popular culture cannot be denied or the influence diminished.

Not everyone is versed, as you say, however, everyone is influenced by popular culture.

A few can move mountains.

Prince invented shortcuts for words....if not, he certainly is the one who made it popular.

Again, i ask, who did this before '79?

Why do you think he did it in 1979 already? The first abbreviation he used was in "Jack U Off".

I don't think anyone does to be cool or it makes them look stupid. It's just a short cut. It's not like this is some type of English class or journalism. What's the big deal?

I'm sure the first instance was Jack U Off in '81, unless there's a boot somewhere I don't recall.

Prior to that, I only remember those "So-and-so 4 Prez" signs you'd see in school elections.

the big deal is now the youth of america have no clue how to spell properly. it seems like most people don't even have a grasp on elementary school grammar skills.

^Exactly!

MANY native English people's language is terrible enough for them to try and worsen it.

I mean 'there' is not the same as 'they're' and none of those is the same as 'their'.

But lots of natives don't seem to know that.

And just don't get me started with the 'should of' dones...

I think it is clear he is somewhat responsible for bringing the shorthand style into pop culture.

Sly Stone - "Luv N' Haight"

Graham Central Station - "Happ-E-2-C-U-A-Ginn"

And they were not the first either. Shortened words were not invented by Prince, people.

I'm a SpEd teacher-- for 22 years....

I'm sorry, but I hate when students use "ADHD" to explain away things.

It's a real thing, but it's thrown around a lot...

  • "I didn't do my homework. I got distracted with my ADHD and..."
  • "I don't remember you telling me about that assignment/test. I have ADHD and..."
  • "You know my son has ADHD, so you have to..."

I tell my students: If you KNOW you have it, than let's work to overcome it and work around it, not use it as a "reason" for everything...

Bottom line is, you like using abbreviated text. Own it. shrug

its more the carpel tunnels really..less typing the less my wrists will hurt! i grew out the h part. still the add makes me not read the really long posts. i just scroll after awhile. i don't see why i need to worry about punctuation and all that stuff when i can get my point across without it. it's not like i'm writing a term paper for a grade. this drives my good friend corryn crazy. she's a sp/ed teacher too!
