Words cannot express how much I adore this song.
It's one of those rare moments in music where a song feels as if it has magical powers to take you to a whole other dimension, time and space.
Eric's flute really adds an almost mystical feel to the song. I conjure up all sorts of fantastical imagery in my head when I hear it, quiet forests, magic mushrooms, pixies and elves.... shit, maybe I need to lay off the ganja!
I love it. My favourite ever Prince song (sitting alongside All My Dreams). [Edited 1/16/11 2:50am]

When I was engaged back in 2004, that was going to be my "1st dance" song. I still love it, but it kind of evokes unpleasant memories. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Pinnacle of the Revolution era, one of Prince's best tracks ever ever ever.
I think this kind of stuff scared him a little.

What do you mean? | |

Masterpiece. I think It was a big mistake to release it on the side three of a compilation .

Your comment reminds me of what Susan Rogers said about him destroying the master version of "Empty Room" or was it another song, I can't remember, because supposedly he didn't like to show any signs of vulnerability at the time(given that he was fresh out of the break with Susannah).
"Power Fantastic" is one of my fave songs by him. I also love the subtle Joni Mitchell influence.

Love it. I don't listen to it very often, maybe I have to be in the mood for it. It used to inspire me to do some dance routines, which I really enjoyed.

I agree wholeheartedly.
I'd also love to have a perfect copy of the instrumental intro... [Edited 1/17/11 15:01pm] O+>

Power Fantastic was recorded mid March 1985
a song based on a composition by Lisa Coleman called "Carousel"
according to engineer Susan Rogers
Prince sang in a corner of the room
It was some of the most intimate experience of her career:
She felt at the very center of artistic creation
Eric Leed, who played a lilting flute solo
walked out of the studio feeling goose bumps
"That's one of the greatest things we ever did," he remembered
Susan Rogers noted this song was "Nailed in one take"
Power Fantastic was supposed to be one
of the cornerstones of Prince & the Revolutions
next project the Dream Factory
Late at night, when the world is sleeping
U r frightened, 'cause the Power's creeping
In your room is something u're afraid of
Life or doom is what this feelings made of
Power Fantastic
Is in your life at last
U're a little apprehensive
'Cause what it is is what u want and need
Minor G is the chord of pleasure
It will be played eleven measures
U will see fire, but u're cool as ice
U lie if u say this isn't nice.
Power Fantastic
Is in your life at last
U're a little apprehensive
What it is is what u want and need
Power, Power
Power Fantastic
Is in your life at last
U're a wee bit apprehensive
'Cause what it is is what u want and need
Power, Power, Power Fantastic

I totally agree with you. the Purple Rain success scared him. the 1985-1986 music sessions with the Revolution and other in the camp totally scared him. When your on the edge of another level of greatness it can be scarry for Prince and many other people

Do you have the intro to Power Fantastic too?
the lyrics to Power Fantastic & Shockadelica are similar. He obviously got the lyrics and theme for Shockadelica from Power Fantastic

Absolutely beautiful song. One of my top 10 fave songs by any artist. However, for some reason non-fans don't seem to get it (at least the ones I know). It's the one song that I have repeatedly played for people to "prove" Prince's brilliance and I get odd looks or "this is CRAP!", (that last one was a direct quote from my boyfriend who is a minor Prince fan). I just don't get people's taste sometimes.

I gave up a long time ago trying to persuade people to like Prince or anyone else - loving what I do is enough for me.. It's usually a closed mind rather than the music itself being poor.
Anyway, The Power Fantastic is a standout in Prince's career..a beautifully gentle melody that drips atmosphere. It's one of a handful of songs I know which are short yet incredibly beautiful without a note wasted (e.g. The Morning Fog by Kate or Aikea Guinea by Cocteau Twins).
If only all music could be so inspired! [Edited 1/18/11 11:48am] "I'm much too hot to be cool"

I love that song and agree with has been said earlier.
The influence of Wendy & Lisa at that time was huge. People often underestimate how crucial their infuence was during that era.... too bad they're not around him anymore
For me, this trio is probably what musically embodies best the core of Prince's music.

One of his finest recordings. A shame it wasn't released at the time. The Dream Factory, with The Revolution, would have been an incredible record. * * *

It's almost unbelievable that he could release certain other songs when he had this stashed away for 8 years. I do question his common sense, i really do.

Great track. I always think of this as a true Revolution track as opposed to a Prince song embellished with help from Wendy and Lisa. Other songs were similar in terms of collaborative spirit and high quality: All My Dreams, Mountains, Sometimes it Snows in April. However, this song is just magic and the way it was recorded adds to the lore.
The song had better been good with that name.
