I heard that during the break in his concert in Cologne. For me exactly THAT was the moment I turned from a MJ enthousiast to a MJ 'Hater' Somehow it upset me in such a way... dunno... something inside my mind snapped The man of science has learned to believe in justification, not by faith, but by verification - Thomas Henry Huxley

Freaky.. I was gonna post this same subject yesterday but thought 'ahh, they probably all know blah blah' - that's so odd.. ?
Why do people hate MJ for his band playing a Prince track in a little interval? Surely that's a nod to Prince, in a positive way?

Wasn't there a MJ song snippet in the eighties meddley that Prince used to do at the end of his shows back then (maybe The way you make me feel?). So it was just a way to pay it back politely from the MJ camp...who knows? "open your heart, open your mind
A train is leaving all day..."

WOW! I never knew MJ to cover anything Prince related! Although its just the band its still cool - if I was at this show I would flipped out thinking that Prince was gonna show up on stage with MJ!
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

What are y'all getting all bent out of shape for?
Nobody said anything when Prince and Rosie covered Janet's What Have You Done For Me Lately (ooh, ooh ooh, yeah!) on tour?
Why is this any different?

ew Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Well that's because the The Time wrote the song, not her.

i saw him at Aintree racecourse on the Bad tour-brill show and performance-and beautiful night was a highlight for me.
everyone sang the vocal bits-the crowd LOVED it-and i took it as a massive nod to Prince-how could it be seen/taken in any other way
kim wilde opened-ans she was so good-she did her set twice if i recall
man what a day
and for the record-its the biggest crowd ive ever beei in by a mile-it took our coach 3 hours to get out of the car park ........
and for some strange reason-EVERYONE and i do mean ever single person you could see cried during man in the mirror-me included

well, jimmy jam and terry lewis wrote the song

yeah I think it was 'The way you make me feel'
they had some little jabs back and forth too. There was a joke that Bubbles was wearing a prince shirt and in the Partyman video Prince gives a chimp a trick banana. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

This is not so far fetched.
Like many of us at the org, in those days Prince was my hero, the end all be all and all that. But Prince was considered second to Michael in the eyes of most. It was extremely aggravating that the masses forgot Prince after Purple Rain, even though he followed it up with 3 fantastic albums (not to mention the side projects). Michael on the other hand could do no wrong.
Even though it took him 5 years to follow up Thriller--5 years in which Prince delivered 10 albums including side projects--he still was supposedly the best. His videos couldnt be debuted on MTV like everybody else, he had to be on CBS at 8pm prime time...then we had to hear the numbers of viewers who tuned in. Nothing was aimed at being an artist making an artistic statement, it was all to be the best selling artist, the most watched artist, blah blah blah.
And when Bad finally dropped, I grabbed my mom's record (cause I for damn sure didnt buy that shit--one of the most overated albums ever!) and placed it on my bed next to Prince's Parade album. Do it now...the similarities are obvious (more so if you lay Bad next to the "Kiss" 12 inch). Now MJ is copying my man??!! Suddenly he was grabbing his nuts as he danced (OH! SO SHOCKING!!), and he was "Bad"? I too took it upon myself to educate all to why Prince was the man and Mike was a distant second.
Now...I was 13 years old back then and didnt know what I know now. If the conversation comes up I still give my argument for Prince's superiority, but I also understand things a little better and have no problem giving Mike the props he most definitely deserves. Apples and oranges, you know?
But back then, MJ was garbage IMO. [Edited 1/14/11 18:35pm] She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

I look at it as a tribute to Prince. MJ was riding high in those BAD years. Prince had his own success, but not on the scale of MJ. So for the so-called "King of Pop" to use a groove from a real musician, that's respect. Or, maybe it was the band's choice and MJ didn't know it was a Prince tune. He was probably sleeping in the hyperbaric chamber with the elephant man's bones and bubbles during that break. I just read the the thread about shitty things non-Prince fans say, and here I am givin' that poor dead singer some shit.

Funny how some fans get all crazy when it comes to Michael. [Edited 1/14/11 19:04pm] "I never wanted to be your weekend lover..."

It's a compliment if anything.
Everyone knows Jacko was obsessed with Prince. I'm actually surprised he didn't do more of Prince's music considering.

Aside from the fact that Michael's grandfather's name was Prince Scruse. Katherine's father.
For the guys that don't like the fact that Michael's band jammed on "Beautiful Night", how do you feel about the fact that Prince has covered the following songs in the past:
I Want You Back Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) Billie Jean I Can't Help It
How do you feel about the fact that they were friends, shot hoops with each other at Paisley Park, and traded rare James Brown footage with each other?
Just wondering. Prince and Michael are my joint two favorite artists of all time, and the animosity between certain segments of each's fanbase continually baffles me. What the hell is there to be mad about? The fact that the MEDIA pitted them against each other and they both played into it at times for the sake of hype and PR?
If you can't enjoy some music because of some retarded media-created "rivalry", then I feel very sorry for you.

Exactly, well said. Furthermore, Me and some other hardcore P fans (back then) were there during one of the shows in Rotterdam just to check out 'the other great preformer' and that interlude definitely felt as "giving props and respect" - at least from the band. It was very well received by the audience too, with some parts of the crowd even doing the "oh-eh-oh"chant! It was very cool and - young that we were - we were even proud to be P fans that moment. I remember being ecstatic... Anyhow, I really thought most of us here were aware of the fact that this was played.

This post was put up out of surprise...I dig the fact that MJ's band did this tune..Prince covered those tunes you mentioned way after 88 and they shot hoops maybe once..u make it sound like it was a regular thing...it wasn't..I'm not mad about anything where this post is concerned, and who says we can't enjoy the music whilst discussing MJ and Prince and the rivalry/admiration they had with one and other?
