hmmmm
not sure
it would be pretty risky releasing that in 1984 as a single as he was THE biggest star on the planet
you sure it would have been a hit?

Hmm... Yeah true.
Just to add, 17 and In My Hair are my two favourite B-Sides also.

I remember the days when DJs would play these songs on the radio just for the Hell of it and 17 Days got huge airplay.
Back in the days before internet, ebay,Amazon you could not get stuff as easy as you can now. We used to go to Pizza Hut because they had 17 Days in the jukebox and we would play the song over and over and eat pizza all night.
I finally got the 12 inch version of the WDC single in 1987 and I would listen to that song over and over until the Hot Thing 12 inch came out that November.

It was the song that started it all for me.

17 Days definately could have been a hit. IIRC, there was a specific reason WB didn't want it on the Purple Rain album. Maybe they thought it didn't fit? Someone with a better memory could fill in the story behind it. I think with all the 7" & 12" single sales of WDC when it was a hit, add some airplay, plus when it was included on The Hits/B-Sides, surely anyone with a more-than-passing interest in Prince has heard it.

I was at the MSG show on the 18th and I swear to GOD he threw in the bassline to 17 days while all the celebs were on stage.
It was in an interim between songs, just bass and drums. But that bassline is instantly recognizable to me.
Maybe no one else caught it, but I did.

Totally love this song--nothing bad to say about it! "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

One of my favs. That was back when his b-sides sounded as good as album cuts. I remember trying to convince someone that Erotic City wasn't on Purple Rain. She swore it was because she was so familiar with it. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. OMG you just reminded me! I had a friend whose parents owned a pub with a jukebox in it, and she got her tape recorder and taped HCYDCMA from the jukebox speaker for me

Great song. However not a single. Even back then there was calculation in using B-sides to further mythology and firm up the hardcore. Stuff like Erotic City was meant for street cred/cult status and not for the fairweather mainstream fans who just jumped on board with PR.

Yes I'm sure."I would die 4 u" was a hit and "17 days" is a much stronger and better song.

There is something hard to describe in words about hearing those songs for the 1st time on radio and then on a record player.
For me it's something about the time of day/night season
I always remember 17 Days connected to picnics and on my way to school
Erotic City always feels like the sun going down or twilight and the house is quiet

Agreed! I miss the B-sides being important to the Prince catalog. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. Could I be safe to assume that this song was one of the 100 sings prepared for use in the Purple Rain film project? I just wonder, if it was, then where would would it have fitted? Any suggestions for its placement in at least any of the deleted scenes? Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

It easily could have, but since it was supposed to be with Vanity 6 sung by Brenda Bennett it's hard to tell. I'm going to look thru the original script and see if it's in there
I could actually see it in the same movie period with WDC since it's dealing with a sort of splitting of the 2 lovers for whatever reason
the Vanity 6 II album would have been hot [Edited 1/18/11 7:36am]

I don't think it's in there, not in my copy (we have the same one) at least when I had read thru a couple of times [Edited 1/18/11 9:41am] Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band.
