I still can't believe a song like "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" kept "Purple Rain" from being Prince's third consecutive Billboard Hot 100 hit from "Purple Rain". Just felt like reminiscing about Prince's pop hits and where his music was in relation to what was happening in the marketplace.

I'd chalk it up to being the 1st single off an album that produced many big hits vs. the 3rd single off an album that produced many big hits. Besides, that radio edit is horrendous and removes the best part of the entire song. They should have never released the the 4 minute edit and forced radio to play the whole thing, a la "Hey Jude". There was so much momentum behind the project, they could have gotten away with it.

Wow, you are so funny. Anyway, initially I thought the radio edit of the guitar solo was for urban radio stations that played r&b music, because typically r&b stations don't play songs that even remotely sound like rock music, but I was surprised that pop stations edited the solo, because that solo is just as pop as the lyrics and melody. I'm glad Prince has altered the arrangement for his concerts, because as a recording the production is so dated (especially the sound of Bobby Z's drum snare). I'm still having nightmares of Patti Labelle butchering this song at the BET Awards when Prince received his lifetime achievement award.

I know.. thank God someone said it. Just cause someone has been 'in the business' for a long time or classed as a legend it doesn't mean that they can do no wrong. Cause she definitely did do wrong there.

Wasn't her best performance ever, but it beat the crap out of Trey Songz' rendition earlier in the show...

Yeah, I do not particularly care for Patti when she sings on TV. She doesn't do it on her records very often, and I don't know if she does at her normal concerts, but whenever she's on TV she really over-does it with the vocal gymnastics. It's completely unnecessary, ruins an otherwise nice song, and she's not really that good at it. She just squeals a bunch like she's showing off, and acts like she's having a seizure and it's supposed to be impressive. Don't get me wrong, I think she's talented and I do like her voice, but the vocal pyrokinetics on TV always just leave me cold and feeling a little embarrassed for her.

Nice list-love all the songs and Wham was deserving of number one also-should have been a tie

She was more than a little grating, but I love the part where she kicked her shoes off.

Thanks thedance. I pretty use prince in print-the website and look for the peak position of a particular song I'm interested in and go to billboard.com and search through the view archive to find the top ten songs that were popular at the time of Prince's hits. Looking back at the charts back then, it amazes me that those songs not just Prince's stood the test of time. Even Lionel Richie's records (which I'm not very fond of), has a quality that sounds like time and effort went into those records. Now the music of today sound like they were written and recorded in 5 minutes.

I think "Purple Rain" the radio edit robbed the listeners of the experience of listening to a great ROCK song. It surprised me when I learned "Purple Rain" did well with urban contemporary stations back then considering the r&b stations don't play songs that even sound like they have power chords.

Missing out #1 but having the #2 AND #3 slots is pretty bitchin' and nothing to complain about.

It always irked me that of all little P's great songs throughout the years, his first UK No.1 was the turgid and puerile "The Most Beautiful Girl in..." urrgh, i can't even bring myself to type the whole title...

I disagree. No it's not as good as Prince singing Purple Rain-nothing is for that matter, but she put her heart into it. I loved her version and for that matter Alicia Keys and Esperanza Spaulding(sp?) performances too.
