I guess kind of. But that was more like how pretty much all hip-hop at the time was sampling funk and soul records, it's just that Prince was sampling himself.

This is just more like, he played the groove to ? of U and sang different lyrics and words over it.

If he's done a studio version, it'll be closer to the Carmen analogy. But it could just be a live jam. Or a song that he's working on and wanted to test the lyrics, but the band hasn't learned the groove to the actual new song yet.
