Songs about politics, history

I'm listening Prince's great songs "Dear Mr. Man", "Cinnamon Girl" and I think they are great.

Nice lyrics and as always P. shows us that he can sing and play anything, any genre, any theme, any vocals.

I would like to know if there is any more political songs P. wrote.

A few that I can think off the top, but there's always Ronnie Talk to Russia and Partyup, and another few that somewhat relate? Annie Christian & Free

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

You are wrong. He does amazing songs on political theme, at least the ones I can think of.

Also, I would think that song "Sign O' the Times" is somehow political also, and that is a GREAT song.

And little pinch of politics in his song "Lavaux"

"Take me to the vineyards of Lavaux
Wanna see the mountains where the waters flow
Life back home depresses me, just another form of slavery
The cost of freedom is anything but free"

Well....I'd kind of consider "1999" a political song.."Why does everybody have a bomb?" I also LOVE Resolution too.

Yeah! The fear of the Atomic Bomb!!!! That was what everybody was talking about back then!

I love Resolution 2! I have the lyrics to this song framed on my wall. Really thought provoking!!

"He's gay" used to mean he's happy.

Nowdays, happy ain't allowed.

Took only a few years of listening to this song before I knew what these lyrics meant.

Actually it does work, writting your rep or senator is important. I do it all the time, its the only way to get your voice heard other than voting. Ppl should do that more often...but sigh...its too much work for Americans. sad

for RttR i was old enough when it came out to know about the threat most people thought Russia Posed... and the idea that we should talk to them was pretty cool. And in fact it happened. The wall came down and since then we are much closer to what is left of Russia.

dear mr man on the other hand seems to forget how much the US spends feeding the hungry in at home and all over the world.

there is an old prince interview from 81 or 82 in which Prince said Regan was a better president than carter. And I know for sure that Prince is a republican this time of the year....

he spoke out against anti-muslim bigotory in his song, something that hardly any republican would ever do.

Who said that Prince doesn't make good songs about Politics, you are crazy wrong.

I listened his song "Avalanche", and this is a masterpiece, IMO.

I really hope that Prince writes more songs about politics, history, slavery, Prince is sooooo good writing them.Pure genius!

Avalanche:

He was not or never had been in favor
of setting r people free
if it wasn't 4 the 13th Amendment
we woulda been born in slavery
He was not or never had been in favor
of letting us vote so u c...
Abraham Lincoln was a racist who said
"U cannot escape from history"

Like the snow comin' down the mountain
that landed on Wounded Knee
nobody wants 2 take the weight-
the responsibility

Hear the joyous sound of freedom
The Harlem Renaissance
Hear Duke Ellington and his band
kick another jungle jam
Ooh, do u wanna dance?
Who's that lurking in the shadows?
Mr. John Hammond with his pen in hand...
sayin' "Sign ur kingdom over 2 me
and b known throughout the land!"
But, u ain't got no money, U ain't got no cash,
So u sign yo name and he claims innocence
just like every snowflake in an avalanche...

Like the snow comin' down the mountain
that landed on Wounded Knee
nobody wants 2 take the weight-
the responsability

It's so beautiful!

that is just NOT true at all. G W Bush was very clear on that matter, he went out of his way to make sure that we all knew that the war on terror was NOT a war on Muslim. He went to Muslim leaders and talked to them about it.

and what song?

I came across the song lyrics "Slave 2 The System". I love the lyrics, but I've never heard this song.

I have almost every song by Prince, but I'm missing this one. Where could I find it and listen to it?

Thank you

"cinnamon girl"

i agree with you on the bush part, but there is no doubt many republicans have used it to their political advantage by using fear mongering.
