1. I like Cerebus...alot.
2. Jake...Dude its not that serious...Why do you feel you need to educate people. It is not your place to do so. This little speech of yours does little excuse you from some of the just plain assanine things you've had to say to people.
People that post on this site come from different countries and walks of life with different experiences and varied ages. Some may speak english perfectly some may not...I mean is that so hard to comprehend.
For the most part we are all here because we appreciate a musician called Prince. We are suppossed to have fun, learn new things and help each other. Yes people may write things you may think are silly or worthless but that is no reason to tear someone down so harshly or claim you are of superior intelligence or that someone has a mental illness. That is not necessary. If a teacher spoke that way to his or her students, he or she should rightfully be fired. I use a teacher as an example since you have appointed yourself the official professor of Prince.org. I will never understand this kind of behaviour.
A lot of you are so brave because you are sitting behind your computer screen. Is this how you communicate with people in your daily life. The superiority complex really needs to stop. This really is not about hurt feelings or whatever...its plain human decency and a little something called TACT.
[Edited 1/14/11 9:42am]
Only a fool thinks he knows everything and a wise man knows he knows nothing at all, so you got your answer there It's not that serious and when you claim you know it all you don't.
A lot of you are so brave because you are sitting behind your computer screen. Is this how you communicate with people in your daily life 100 % agree, some people use the "virtual world" to validate themselves and if that works for you.. hey good for you, but realize that you've never had the power, don't have the power, and NEVER will have the power to define anyone on here but yourself... it's understandable if you get frustrated, but it shows how much of a life, you really have if you have enough to come on here and do all of that lol. I have said my two cents and I am done
[Edited 1/14/11 17:58pm]
Yea you know what are you gonna do......I normally dont have the time or energy to get into lengthy conversations or arguments with folks on the internet no less... or take time outta my day to start lecturing people but after reading his speech...I'm like "Come ON man...Are you for real right now". I joined this site to have fun, not to fight with people but I just had to say what I said.
Whatever. He's probably cussing someone out or telling them how mentally challenged they are because they had a few typos in their thread right this minute.
Rant over.
Now i'm done |

Oh my goodness First of all, thank you Spinlight for saying a lot of what I was going to say here, because now I don't have to. Let me attempt to explain myself... I am 22 years old and have been using the internet since the early 90s, when I was just a young kid. I am a big fan of the Internet, and I have been a member of many many forums over the years. One forum in particular, is the most successful Internet forum in history, and costs $10 for a membership. This forum has sub forums of every category you could possibly imagine, and then sub forums inside those. This particular forum has millions of members, literally, and is so successful because of the strict moderation of quality. If you post shit threads, they will be deleted. If you post more shit threads, you will get a suspension of your account, ranging from a week to several months. Quality is enforced in every regard, every single post is expected to follow certain guidelines and there are consequences and punishments, even permanent bans resulting in the loss of your ten dollars, for being a bad poster. This is what I'm used to. This is what I like, and this is what makes a forum good. The forum I'm talking about isn't the only forum to operate using this model, but it's certainly the most popular forum to ever exist. I feel that the moderation on prince.org is extremely lackluster, especially in the past year or so. Quality is not enforced or required whatsoever, and this bothers me a great deal. I take it upon myself to point out to people when they are behaving or writing inadequately, ultimately because I have this hope that every time I say something snarky, sardonic, rude, or just plain mean, it will somehow help. I guess I hope that the collective prince.org consciousness will begin to realize there is a need for a greater standard of quality on this website, and begin to fix itself. I dont really know what else to say, other than I wish I could be a moderator here. I know most of you probably think that would be absolutely dreadful, but this place would clean up quickly, and I am completely confident the quality of this forum would increase drastically. The threads on a popular Internet forum need to have the following things: A clear, intelligible thread title that accurately depicts the subject and contents of the thread A first post containing well written, well thought out content, and subsequently an invitation and plenty of room for discussion. Reply posts should have well written, well thought out content directly relating to the first post. Every. Single. Thread. Every single damn thread needs to follow this format. No exceptions. If a post doesn't have intelligible content, there should be a consequence so that the poster understand what they did wrong and has incentive to never do it again. Threads should never have a misleading title. Threads should never be created to express a one to three sentence statement with no actual content or room for discussion. Duplicate threads should never be created. Similar threads should never be created. Every single thread needs to contain distinctly different content from every other thread. Every reply post should be intelligible, relevant, and interesting. No exceptions, ever. I do not troll just to troll. I do not crave attention (yes, I enjoy attention, but who doesn't?) . I do not act this way out of cruelty. I am what I am due to knowledge and experience of the Internet, and what makes a good website. I just want this place to stop being such a disgusting cesspool. Are you kidding me? This is not my endorsement for a Jake For Moderator campaign, but puh-leez. People have lively opinions about the current mods (there's, like, 4 despite it showing about 11 million above every subforum). I ain't gonna name names, but... I'm just gonna say that if some dude correcting your grammar is the worst of your moderator troubles, you'll do fine. |

I agree with much of what you said about this website - plenty of opportunity for improvement; however, it does provide a good FREE service - speaking for myself, I'm thankful for the information it / folks provide regarding my favorite musician of all time.
Have a good evening - chill with a beverage you enjoy - and live a little.

Jakeasaurus, what is this super-secret forum you mentioned?
I've read your posts throughout the years. Some are on-point; most are civil but some are just outright arrogant and mean. You're not going to change the world (or even this website) with that kind of attitude.
Blasting someone for not finding 20Ten on eBay? Granted, it's easy to find there but you could've (should've) just offered up the links you found as a helpful gesture.

I get what you're saying, but that's really not turning the other cheek. Turning the other cheek refers to someone who has wronged you in some way . . . the analogy of getting slapped in the cheek, and instead of retaliating you offer them your other cheek to slap.
This thread started off with someone inquiring about 20Ten and turned into something nasty. Even if the OP was not sincere in their request, at least their post was not malicious.

Some people take offense to blatant ignorance, I guess? I know some people are offended by stupidity (or rather, their perception of what "stupidity" is). Admittedly, this is devil's advocate.
Anyway, the point is that people get sick and tired of the same posts, the same kind of stupdity, and the lack of moderation. Some people have criticized the mods on Prince.org for being fickle or obsessive or malicious and they don't even moderate at all like I've seen other forum moderators. (For instance, it's pretty customary for mods to be example posters and I can tell you that that is for sure not the case with some mods.) A lot of stupid shit that runs roughshod over this forum should be culled. The bolded and highlighted notices above are NOT taken seriously, they're moderated by what seems like ONLY luv4u here in P:M&M, and then we have threads like this where someone's laziness was encouraged at the expense of the sanity of others or the credibility of the forum.
This sort of issue happened a lot on Alt.Music.Prince. Why? Because of the lack of any moderation. Incessant posts that have been answered tons of times before (hi, Princepedia! what's happening with you?!), posts that trail off into bizarre crap about egypt or lord of the rings and Prince's relation to them, etc. Truthfully, I think we need a new subforum for just the creepy people to post in and they can run on incessantly about shit that makes no sense and post their annoying poems and pictures of random girls there as opposed to here where we get so few worthwhile threads.
You think that the environment here has not suffered because of the lack of moderation causing stupid threads like this to litter the top of the forum? |

When I say inadequate writing, I am not necessarily talking about spelling and grammar, unless it's extremely illegible.
And let me pose a question to everyone: Is being self-righteous such a bad thing when everything you're being self-righteous about is completely true and correct? [Edited 1/15/11 5:19am] |

Self-righteousness, by its very definition, negates your assertion that it can be "completely true and correct"... To further aid you in your quest for martyrdom, I shall educate you.
: convinced of one's own righteousness especially in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others : narrow-mindedly moralistic

Let's not even mention that it is entirely incorrect to be narrow-minded, ever. |

I absolutely agree that the environment here has suffered from a lack of moderation.
There are far too many silly threads (e.g. "What kind of cereal does Prince eat"), too many duplicate threads (e.g. "How many instruments does Prince play") and threads, like this current one, that really don't need to exist at all. Some of the threads (like the aforementioned Instruments thread) are covered in FAQ; the problem is that new thread submissions seem to be set to auto-approval. Instead, they should be pointed to the FAQ and their thread submission declined.
I also think that the option of quoting a previous post (with entire text and photos) should be limited. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to scroll through hundreds of duplicate photos to find the one-sentence reply. Even with high-speed Internet, some of these threads get bogged down very quickly with photos. I would almost venture to remove photos within threads entirely, but we're not at that point yet. I think with a fuller gallery section, we'd see fewer and fewer "Post images of Prince during XXXXX-era" threads.

Agreed. I have never understood the Image threads. Unless I was looking for a specific picture of Prince, why is Google not enough? |

Stated as simply as possible; there is a difference between being self-righteous and being a self-righteous asshole. You have yet to learned that difference. Your heavy handed belittling of others because you don't like the way they post is mean-spirited, rude and mannerless. There is no place for it here, on any other board, or in any situation in the world of face to face human interaction, as it adds nothing to the quality of the discussions you are supposedly so concerned with. |

Ok let me just sum this up, I see some of you are angry about the post allowed on this forum.. ok understandable, but let me just allow you to see it everyone elses' way... If you want to act like an ass because you think you got it like that on the org, as much as you love it and think it's the best thing on the Earth, to the rest of the world you plain and simply look like an ass. Nice nice nice, but you know what?? that shit only makes you look more stupid, and proves everyone right... There is nothing wrong with people having their own opinion, but if you expect to be respected you have to give respect in return. I normally don't like to comment on situations like this, but you can not measure my or anyone elses' intelligence on this org and by the way it looks, you can't even measure your own. Don't care who the hell you think you are but it won't stop me from posting things and it certainly won't stop you from looking simple. You seem like a smart guy, who rather display his ignorant side more than anything. No one has the right on this website, to harass anyone about anything, not even you.. don't care if you feel like you do, you feel self righteous about it. Like I said a fool thinks he knows everything, while a wise man knows he knows nothing. I think the only stream of stupidity in this thread is flowing from you.. period point blank. So with that being said, thanks for posting the ebay thread, I still haven't clicked on it because you can stick that link where the sun don't shine .
Take Care Everyone |
