He wrote this in the post-Parade/Under the Cherry Moon period in which he'd sacked Wendy & Lisa and was motivated by proving his artistic integrity to the World. He was becoming more politically motivated and this song was inspired by America bombing Libya in Spring '86. According to Alex Hahn, in the book 'Possessed', he'd cut short a trip to Europe because of this same bombing. (Not sure if it's P or Hahn that was confused as to where Libya is in the World tho!)
When the song says;
Little babies in makeup terrorising Western World...
Hahn suggests this line is a "direct allusion to Libyan dictatror Muammar el-Qaddaffi (Colonel Gadaffi)". The Crystal Ball i would suggest is P asking his lover if she knows the future after all this turbulence in the World. But the general message of the song (as it was always back then) seems to be, in times of fear of war and death, you need to have lots of sex...; As bombs explode around us and hate advances on the right [possible anti-Republican/anti fascist reference?] the only thing that matters baby, is the love that we make tonight. ...and trust in god;
...she's sayin' "Dear Jesus, save us from temptation

This song is classic old-school Prince. It is Graffiti Bridge's When doves Cry. That's what he was going for at least - use of the motorbike in the video again to symbolise his solitude. The angsty kid whose heart-broken coz his parents are fighting in Purple Rain, has now grown up, got his own place and is now feeling abandoned by women instead.
It's a song about his despair to the love that he is still waiting for. The one that he has yet to meet and prays that exist. It is a cry out to this idea of love, as his spirit has been stolen (thief in the temple bit) by the betrayal of his ex within their failed relationship. He is abandoned and alone and blurs that desperate plea to either romance or religion - the two forces that drive us on towards our fate.

Beginning Endlessly...to this day I'm stumped.
I really cant fathom to bother on what it is about either...it has alot to do with spirituality, history and love though....but it is very indirect and the lyrics are not written in harmony.
History is full of praise for another's history More and more than the one that became before both u and me Left alone with our devices, whatever will be will be A brand new story in the making beginning endlessly
I mean I get it but he is talking about like two different things at the same time and it really does not flow together at all in the song as a whole...
He could have left the subject of love out of the picture and it...in my opinion would have worked well off.
Nevermind the birdfeed honey Just tell me your name...
I get it..but what does that have to do with the historical elements of this song? He begins talking to a woman about how they love eachother but throws in all this constricting thoughts about history... Straight Jacket Funk Affair

He quite often talks about letting go of the past and creating a new begining or new future which I think he's saying here. It's particularly good to do this in a new relationship and let go of the past 'baggage'.
The first part of the song about the soul flying using thoughts to control the direction I have mentioned before could be about astral projection as I think he's into this, also and could be the meaning behind Around The World In A Day? IMHO

That is a good way of seeing it. I respect that. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

I don't understand Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance, but i like this. Has this song any sense ?! And what title of song has to do with all the lyric ? So evil girl, if one of us has a date,
With the undertaker, which one will it be?

It was like the rap version of Glamorous Life in my opinion...same subject and theme. Illusion as in their love is 'just a mirage'....Coma...they are not realising their love is fake because it is based on material. Pimp as in..they are both pimping eachother ..and the circumstance is the effect of their fake relationship...nothing. Nobody wins. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
