It's fantastic.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

it's a bit, uh, "90's" isn't it? Lots of very dignified playing. A bit soulful, a bit funky, a bit jazzy, all at the same time. A bit boring frankly. A lot of it is just a Vonda Shepard appearance away from being the music to Allie McBeal.

Still worth getting though, if that was the original question.

I love the album, it's a new direct for Prince. It's basically the closest thing to a Jazz/Blues album he's ever made. Some of the songs are dark (for instance: My Little Pill, There Is Lonely) but others are fun and upbeat in a direction he's never really gone before (like It's About That Walk, The Rest Of My Life, Sarah). It's definitely worth a few listens if you ask me.

time flies.

I haven't listened to it in a while. I seem to recall really liking a few songs (She Spoke To Me, When The Lights Go Down, Old Friends and Extraodinary) and never listening to the others. The only copy I own is a WB promo CDR that I paid $1.99 for years after it was releases, though. So maybe that says something.

Don't take others opinions on it, you've got to listen first and decide for yourself.

YES! I love this album. I just listened to it last weekend and was talking about how many gems were on it. My favorites, that actually appear on many different P playlists that I have are:

She Spoke 2 Me ( Love, love love this extended version!!)

5 Women

Extraordinary

When the Lights Go Down

There is Lonely

Old Friend 4 Sale

So, for me, 6/10 of the songs are absolute classics! cool

perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

Great album.

That sums it up for me. I like this album. Definately a nice change from other Prince music. I think the music on this album would make a great aftershow setlist...

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I think that's one of the songs I liked, too, but I wasn't sure. I need to pull if off the shelf and give it a listen.

Why has Prince never performed any of these tracks live and there was no music video to any of these tracks ?

Prince didn't promote the release at all since he wasn't with Warners at the time of it's release.

As 'The Digital Gardner' says above, the album was compiled and given to WB along with Chaos & Disorder as part of his severance from his contract. C&D was released at the time, Warners chose to release The Vault in 1999, and they also had the option to release a 'best of' compilation at some time in the future - which they did in 2001 with 'The Very Best Of'.

Both albums (C&D and The Vault) were delivered to Warners 'as is' - complete tracklist and artwork - Everything about these releases was down to Prince.

IIRC, Prince performed 'When The Lights Go Down' and 'She Spoke 2 Me' at the 2009 Montreux Jazz Festival (?).

He also performed both of these tracks during the third show on March 28, 2009 in LA. Actually the third show started in the AM of March 29, 2009.

This album really makes me wonder what other gems may be lurking in that notorious vault. It also makes me wonder what other styles of music Prince may have recorded but not released. Who knows, maybe there is a country & western album in that vault? razz
