his "fans" including die hard ones are the ones to attack his new music. So how can u expect him to have faith in his new music when majority of his die-hard fans don't?

even as a die hard fan myself, i'll be the first to admit that his 80's output was his best. However alot of people are blinded by nostalgia and they don't give enough credit to his 90's and 00's output. They want prince to be the same as he was in the 80's.

As for me, i'd love to hear some songs from the chocolate invasion, musicolgy, 20ten (especially sticky like glue), 3121 and so on

Don't you get it at all?

Prince has been trying to tell you this would happen all along when he mentioned being in his 5th soul. He has now entered a new soul (one that existed sometime around 1010) and, as such, must begin performing all of his old songs because they are now new again.

Incidentally, you may be asking, "But I thought Prince said he was 3 albums ahead of the street?" And this is true, he is. In order for His Royal Badness to create the pop jams you know and love, he had to go so far into the future that he ended up at the beginning of time again.

There was a recent interview in Europe, where the interviewer actually asked P why doesn't he play much of his new music live?

P's response was that, when 15,000+ people come to see him, they expect the 'hits'..........

...of course at the larger shows not everyone is gonna be a fan. But to me, this does sound like he has no faith

Imagine a tour of songs from 2000-10...it WOULD BE AWESOME!!

In 2004 P announced that the hits would be retired(I believe he said this in the 90's too)...I think its about time..

The posters for the O2 shows in 2007 also said the hits for the last time smile.

I understand it though, it's not like he's playing to the few hundred die hards at each show, he has to entertain the whole arena. I agree he could and should throw some new stuff in there though, especially as he plays cover. Play something new instead of a cover dammit.

RIP sad

I think it comes more from his inability to focus coupled with his recent 'okay' musicians, that he can't really be bothered to try to teach the new stuff to. (see the dunhams.)

Rubbish. It's got nothing to do with what his fans think. And besides, as hard as it is for me to believe, his latest release has - on the whole - been quite well received.

look, i agree and so too would love to hear the trax you mentioned. However I totally understand what P 'needs' to do - it's an old but very valid case i.e. he's playing to a big stadium full of casual listeners and they just want the hits, if he didn't play a high % of well know trax there'd be endless moans from his paying customers. We aregue about the old days and how at least 50% of a set would be from the new album i.e. Parade tour, 1999 tour, P. Rain etc, etc BUT times have changed. Also on this tour he has NO current released USA cd to promote!.

by the way i also think that $ would be a stellar track live but needs the live horns rather than synths for full effect.

Alot of the times, promoters put in artists' contracts that they HAVE to play a certain number of hits. Could this possibly be the case?

prince will release a new record called 'welcome to america' it will be political and controversial to those with heavy programming ala tv, newspaper, pharmicutical and dietary attacks on your ability to process the truth .. it will be his 'whats goin on' .. prince must do greatest hits shows to raise funds for the new record

prince like mccartney, goes back so far he's in front of himself

It's the general public that he has no faith in, and their ability to accept and appreciate unfamiliar music. He's probably more than 50% correct. The people on this site are not representative of the majority of people going to these shows. When I told people at work that I went to see him on Saturday, most of them only knew "Raspberry Beret" and "Little Red Corvette", and didn't even remember the Purple Rain songs until I reminded them about them.

I'm just saying...

He shouldn't have any faith in his new music. It's crap. Prince hasn't put out one good track since PE.

I think Prince should stop recording new material and only do live shows/sell cds DVDs of live shows

Then people would get real quiet.

A lot of his new material is good, but there aren't immediate hooks that grab you on initial listens... you have to listen to it over and over and over (as you do most of what gets played on the radio), so that there is a familiarity.

Most people attending arena shows such as these are not on exploratory missions for new music... they want to dance and sing along to the familiar. And because his recent material has barely made a dent in the public consciousness, it's not familiar. It doesn't conjure up emotions or memories of good times for the audience.

I would venture to say 95% of the audience wants to hear what they know.

Music listening (as is music performing can be) is a very self-centered act... people want to hear what they want to hear.

If Prince played a bunch of stuff few had heard, it would not be met with the energy and momentum that was at MSG.

Prince has no faith in his new music! Understandably, because it's just not very original anymore.

A "real" artist who has something important to say (musically or lyrically) releases and performs his art because he needs to. Don't matter if people expect or want something else.

If he were even to stop doing so many damn covers, it would make that much more room for his own material (and that he routinely performs other people's music when he's written enough of his own to fill 100 setlists stuns me).

I get that Prince has to play the hits for big crowds but couldn't he do anonther tour like One Nite Alone? Ever since the Musicology tour his shows have been mostly the hits, I think it's time for something new and different. He's got 6 albums of relatively new an untested material, plus some other stray songs, surely he could base a 2-2 1/2 hour show around that material with some semi-obscure older tracks thrown into the mix.
