Revisiting Under The Cherry Moon I looked up all the threads on what everyone had to say about UTCM and for the most part, they were all a little too harsh. Enjoy your funny bone. I watched it in the theatre when it first came out. I have to admit, I wasn't impressed at all with P and Jerome running around acting like a couple of made up sexually confused panzies. I watched it again last night and I found it quite hillarious, especially when Mary said, "Don't call me baby and get out." It was real funny when her boyfriend was singing happy birthday to her and Christopher said, "Billy Epstein, he's not." Christopher was even more hillarious when he said to Mary, "I bet you been working on that line all night." Does anyone else find this movie amusing? Were our expectations too high after Purple Rain? its a funny movie, and unintentionally so
i do love the end part when the revolution is singing mountains, one of my favourite songs

Mountains is an excellent video, it was beyond it's time. I'm still fascinated by that video. Jason

yup, love the video. The other positive thing i can say about the movie is that it helped me understand the music much much better and i now regard the album as a masterpiece. So i guess if you want to understand parade, u have to watch the movie to do so.

Exactly. You have to see the movie in order to understand Parade. I saw Mountains and Boys & Girls prior to the movie and as a result I thought the videos were awkward. Jason

I really liked it when I first saw it, after reading everyone's bad reviews on it, and I didn't see why it got bad props. just because it wasn't the mysterious, aloof Prince of Purple Rain? But this is, prolly of course, before the Purple Community and the world knew that Prince changes his persona and style every year.
It was really funny and interesting to watch. Plus we got to see a side of him that prolly paralled to his early days as a kid growing up when he had to have humor on his side to get along and relate with ppl.
Now for Parade ...... uh uh idk about that one. Didn't really take a strong liking to the album cuz it didn't hook me, unless I heard Kiss. But the movie helped me grow New Position and Mountains, so that was a plus.
Fav. part was when they were in the car after the horse-track racing/making out afterwards that Christopher asked what something was and mary said "It's called stupid" hehe Then Prince started making fun of her saying how she moaning and groaning when she kissed him, then said she got "black" with it, "Oh Shit! Oh!" lol that was halirious. She got super embarrassed and mad. That whole little scene made me laugh And gotta love his little made-up cubby hole in the mountians Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Yea, that cubby hole that you're talking about is where he and Tricky usually goes. That's what he told Mary. That little cubby hole is cozy for lovers, that's understood. So why was Tricky there? Jason

I've always enjoyed the movie, gives me a good laugh. The part with Katy when Christopher toys about paying the rent always get's me
And Tricky is a joy. While not on my list of 'excellent' films, it is one of my favs.

I don't like any of Prince's movies, Purple Rain included. I'm not a hater, so don't start with any of that shite, i just don't like them. I think they are badly acted, the dialogue is awful, and on the whole i find them quite embarrassing. Even the SOTT "movie" was flawed.
I'm not a film expert/critic by any means, it's just my opinion.

A fun black/white movie to watch. The start of the movie with Prince at the piano grabs ya, at least it did me. Versace, verry impressive. Prince really handled the steering wheel while pulling up in that narrow and tight parking spot. Who knew? Prince can actually drive.

i saw it when it first came out, i didn't think it was that bad, not as bad as graffiti bridge. It was just at a time when he was facing backlash, you know the we are the world debacle and his bodyguards beating up paparazzi did more to damage his newly earned respect than under the cherry moon ever could. People are fickle and every star goes through backlash eventually. Purple Rain was far from flawless too but it's timing was picture perfect, you consider Michael Jackson's success opening a door for an alternative like Prince and then Purple rain as an answer to Jackson's groundbreaking video work, then you add in the fact that 1999 had prepped a core audience for his mega-star status it makes perfect sense. but purple rain was not a great movie, it was maybe a great rock movie but in terms of being a great piece of cinema, it's not. Prince had gotten too big headed by the time of UTCM, he fired people who could have reined in his narcissistic excesses and did everything himself, for a non-filmaker it's great, but as a film to be put up against other films, it's a failure. but i maintain that the time was ripe for Prince failure, the only thing he may have been able to do was to make a good sequel to purple rain, not the mess that was Graffiti Bridge. Also, his attempts to out-Morris Morris were wrong, he knew Morris upstaged him in PR but the way to deal with it was not to take on Morris' character, Prince is best as the mysterious loner which fits with all the great Rock archetypal artists, not some clown making light of everything. No one wanted Prince like that, I didn't.

Do you all think that UTCM would've been better without P? What if P just directed the film and instead of acting in it, he should've let Morris play the part of Christopher. I think it would've been a whole lot funnier. Jason

Hey guys, look at what the media had to say about UTCM after the opening night.
." The next day, when Cherry Moon opened at 941 theaters around the country, paid critics began weighing in with reviews that made the townsfolk seem kind. The New York Times called Prince's character a "self-caressing twerp of dubious provenance." The Washington Post said that in black-and-white, "Prince begins to remind you of something your biology teacher asked you to dissect." USA Today, at least, pointed out that Prince's principal draw isn't his dramatic skill: "Fewer people saw [Purple] Rain for the acting than saw Old Yeller for the sex." In its first weekend, the film grossed $3.1 million—about the same as Walt Disney's new movie The Great Mouse Detective. Jason
