Anybody like the album N.E.W.S?

I've been listening to it alot lately, and though instrumental, it's a great album. What are your opinions on it?

I like it...many won't.

As with a lot of his music...the album makes you feel a certain way...without any words being spoken...

I agree with you, I had a feeling while listening to it that it may not be a fan's favorite. I mean, it lacks the main companent we all love: his voice. But it is a really great album. Like you said, it makes you feel a certain way. The songs are like a musical story that we have to interpret.

Out of everything he released in the last decade, I'd say N.E.W.S is the album I listen to most. I listen to it at work (I'm a writer, so listening to music without words is less distracting) and I put it on a lot when I'm driving home from rehearsals in the evening. It helps me wind down. (I have a hard enough time trying to get to sleep after hours under stage lights, without listening to music that whips me up.)

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Same here, its very soothing. I listen to it at night, to fall asleep. What song is your favorite? Perferably, I love North.

4 out of 5 star album [img:$uid]http://l.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/emoticons7/79.gif[/img:$uid] My point of view of the album is that I wish P would make more instrumental albums. They're great !!!

I like East the best. Love that section in the middle that's sort of Deep Purple/Edgar Winter-ish. cool

That whole T.R.C, O.N.A, N.E.W.S period is such a musically fruitful period. I also love N.E.W.S...I play it at dinner parties from time to time and people are absolutely shocked it's Prince. They love it!!!

I really like N.E.W.S, as i do most of Prince's instrumental work.

Every time i listen to this album i hear different things, which is one of the things i like about it.

It would be great to hear more of this kind of thing.

I agree, he should definatley make more instrumental albums. Does the play the instruments? I mean, besides the obvious guitar. I kbow he can play many so I wonder if that is what he did for this album.

I haven't heard of the other two, I'm guessing they are instrumentals as well?

No, they aren't. And The Rainbow Children (TRC for the lazy) is one of my least favorite albums (except for a couple tracks), so this assertion doesn't really hold water for me.

But, hey - diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks!

Oh! I own that album, it's a bit odd. I like the sound he was going for but he executed it in such a strange manner. The deep scary voice ruined it for me XD

It always seems that there's a thread for this CD every couple of weeks. People either love it or hate it. I love N.E.W.S. and it's probably my all time fave P disc from the last decade.

It lacks one thing that humans love - MELODY.

Someone call me up an hum or whistle me the melody to any one of the songs on there. You can't. The 4 pieces of music on that album are simple vamps that soloists "solo" on. It sounds to me like Prince said, "Okay, here's the groove. Play that shit for 15 minutes. Cool, now play the next one for 15 minutes. Y'all go home and I'll overdub some aimless noodling and call it JAZZ."

It's pretty good for some 7-day forecast Weather Channel music circa 1989.

When music is relaxing that generally means it's unremarkable. Music can be quiet, soft and soothing and still engage your mind. It can still tell a story. This album is audio wallpaper. Maybe that's what He intended. The only story it tells is of a man who believes his own hype and therefore releases some lazy music on occasion. When you think you know it all you stop learning.

Music, like all art, is subjective. It doesn't have one absolute purpose or use. Some people like Iron Maiden because it gets them excited to be at the gym while others like it because relative to their lack of education it seems scholarly. Is that wrong? No. Maybe N.E.W.S. has some grand purpose we ordinary folk cannot yet understand, but for me it serves the same purpose as ambient noise: MIND-NUMBING RELAXATION/VEGATATION.

If others like it, it has value. For me it has none. You asked and I told you what I thought. No need to get nasty.

They are not insrumental albums, but were produced around the same period. If you can get past some of the religious babble/dogma of TRC...(OOPS, I MEAN, THE RAINBOW CHILDREN) you will uncover some his most organic, poetic and groovy stuff.

N.E.W.S...I mean, North, East, West, South is an absolute gem!

Enjoy the discoveries of this period. It's quite rewarding.

I'm kind of lukewarm on N.E.W.S. I really want Prince to make a great instrumental album but so far I don't think he has. N.E.W.S. seems very unfocused and the "songs" seem thrown together. Xpectation is probably my favourite of his instrumental albums and I think it's because the songs are much more distinctive. At times N.E.W.S. seems like a lot of aimless noodling. I'm also not crazy about the way the instruments sound. Everything sounds extremely clean and sterile.

Despite the fact that N.E.W.S. is not a favourite I would love to hear Prince do more instrumental albums but hopefully he will try something completely different. I'd like to hear what he could do with a drummer like Jimmy Chamberlin.
