Prince spent six months in late 2006 and early 2007 performing a string of shows at a small club he dubbed '3121,' located inside the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. This particular gig, recorded in the early AM hours of April 1, 2007, was advertised and sold as the last show of the climactic final weekend in Prince's lengthy Las Vegas residency. Fans eagerly snapped up tickets and traveled to Vegas for one last shot of funk, just seven weeks after Prince's landmark performance before a worldwide television audience at the Super Bowl.

After all the tickets to the final Vegas show had been sold, and all the proceeds pocketed, Prince made a sudden announcement as the weekend got underway: He would extend the residency another month. Expectant fans stepped off their flights in Las Vegas only to hear news that this would not be the final gig; and if they wanted to be part of the official ending, they would need to return for another turn at the purple roulette wheel. The hype surrounding the weekend was merely a stone cold bluff.

Nonetheless, Prince turned out four solid performances over the course of the weekend, including two midnight shows at 3121 and two late-night aftershows in the nearby 3121 Jazz Cuisine restaurant. An bevy of special guests joined the shows; including Sheila E and swedish jazz/funk saxophonist Candy Dulfer on the first night; and Sheila E and former Prince protege Tamar Davis on the second night. The first night's midnight performance was chronicled on the prior Fearless/FBG release "Viva Las Divas," and the second night's midnight performance is presented here.

One of the show's unique moments was the brief return of Tamar, a former protege that Prince featured on his '3121' album. Prince had big plans for Tamar at one point, producing an album project and supporting her on guitar during a brief tour in early 2006. Prince jettisoned Tamar abruptly when their relationship fell prey to music business machinations later that year. He picked up a new singer, Shelby Johnson, to play the role of his female foil and occasional vocal soloist for the Las Vegas run. This performance marked the first onstage reunion of Prince and Tamar since their falling-out.

Another noteworthy contribution to the show came from one of Prince's long-standing friends, band members and associates, Sheila E. She added spice to the set with fiery percussion and vocals on two of her biggest Prince-penned hits, "The Glamorous Life" and "A Love Bizarre." Sheila brought out her father, bandleader Pete Escovedo, as well as her brother, fellow percussionist Juan Escovedo, to join the fun at 3121.

can anybody comment as to the performance of pink cashmere? it's the only song i would bother dling this set for, but if it's an abbreviated performance (as are most airings of this song), i'm not too interested...

It's 6:24 in length and has a nice sax solo as well as a vampy section in the middle with new(improvised?) lyrics.

I was at both the 3121 shows and one aftershow that weekend, it was crazy! I'll have to check these out, thanks to all involved!

is this the one with the long version of black sweat? that's one of the more interesting

post 2001 performances. the bass on it is totally off the hook. very inspired and great

I grabbed it for archiving purposes but I can't picture myself wasting my time listening to Vegas.

Think I need new speakers. The sound is too muddy on my system... But I like the bass playing on Black Sweat!

Yes, not my favourite period, but everything i grab i listen to at least once.

^I grab everything that becomes available, but exactly since Vegas I lost interest in what Prince is playing live.

Last years 20Ten boots were like that for me, while it is nice to have them, the more that were released, the harder it became to listen to them.

In the end i was not even listening to the whole show, they became almost painful to hear.

Still, one must collect and archive.
