I must say that this is one of those rare times that I think Prince missed. There is a vulnerability and pain in this song that I don't think that he grasped. Bonnies version is the best and even George Michael's version is better. Again, one of the few times that I think Prince just missed the boat.

I would love to see Misty C preform to this live with Prince on Piano. Yes this song does touch one's heart.

I disagree (somewhat). Prince's version was marketed toward r&b stations and what he did is great for that genre. His version still gets played on r&b stations today.

I understand ur point about the vulnerability and you're right, Bonnie and George did it justice for a "pop" song. I think Prince did it justice as an r&b song.

I totally agree on all counts.

I don't think Prince did it justice even from an R&B perspective, what he added to the song sticks out like a sore thumb.

Prince-speak is hard to read... rolleyes

Oh! About the song?

  • I don't like Prince's version.... it comes off like, "I Can't Make You Sleep With Me" rolleyes
  • IMO, George Michael's version is whiny. shrug
  • To me, Bonnie's version (the original) is the best... It makes me cry... I can feel her pain in the song... cry

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

Myslím si, že Prince tuhle krásnou písničku zničil přidáním další sloky, kde mluví o sexu. Kompletně změnil význam celé písně.

It can be viewed as a "seduction" ballad, but I don't think it is. I think it's just prince being prince

It's Prince sounding cheap.... and as if the real meaning of the song went over his head:

Talk 2 me, tell me where U wanna be kissed
Talk 2 me, tell me how U want me 2 do this
In this bedroom/church, U can guess the offering

confused lol

Ok this is what the above says:"I think that Prince has destroyed this beautiful song by adding another stanza, where he talks about sex. Completely changed the meaning of the whole song."

and I say IMO, he did change it, but think if this was Princes song and there was no Original to compare it to, It would be classic prince , it would just be a cover and not some what his own if he had not taken such artistic libertys....

It really doesn't. I even like the "One Of Us" remake, despite its unpopularity among orgers.

It isn't his own at all. He didn't write the song. He ad-libbed sexual overtures.

"I Can't Make You Love Me" is supposed to be a pained song about failed love and the subject is one a lot of people don't sing about from quite this perspective. Prince turned it into a song about someone who won't fuck him. The song isn't a seduction song, it's a song of despair. Prince's ego is so huge, he can't even respect an original artist's integrity (whilst disallowing others to reproduce his own work).

He calls it Bonniesamericantreasure in the liner notes then completely changes the intention of the song.

"Just hold me close, between your thighs" confuse

It's like why cover it in the first place?

I really don't like his vocal on it either.

And it shows where Prince's real interests lie. The song itself is about someone who won't love the singer back, or at least doesn't want to be in a relationship with him. His added lyrics make it clear that all he cares about is the fact that she won't fuck him.

Love his version and Bonnie's too...George Michael is the one who missed the boat with his rendition.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

That's funny because GM is the one who apparently understands and respects the intent of the composer, rather than turning it into a song about blue balls.
