Prince songs that NO ONE should cover? Not because the songs are bad, but because they are so closely linked with Prince. For example, just clicked on a link of "Purple Rain" not done by Prince, it just doesn't work no matter how soulful the singer.

, or whatever, owns his music. And he made it that way for a reason. He has demanded such ownership of his music because he knows that nobody can sing Prince or well idk considering the fact that Prince covers alot of other musicians songs but i thought Alica Key's cover of "How Come You Dont Call Me" was pretty good though  | |

i just dont think people should cover prince and try to do it like prince. if they put their own spin on it that can be cool. billy sheehans group niacin used to do purple rain live....bass, hammond organ & drums....no vocals, or guitar |

I used to think that as long as a musician can make the song their own that it was ok. After seeing the BET tribute when Patty Labelle sung Purple Rain and the guitarist stepped forward and SORELY disappointed me and messed up the song (in my opinion) I now say NONE! I'd rather put in my CD and listen to Prince sing his songs beautifully than to hear someone butcher one of his greats.
I find myself liking Prince's covers of other songs better than the original, maybe I'm biased... "You need to laydown and let me show you how we do this thing up in funky town. From the heart of Minnesota here come the purple Yoda guaranteed to bring the dirty new sound! Come on, now!" | |

I was thinking the same that tribute show proved 2 me that no one should mess with Prince's music. Janelle actually did Let's Go Crazy very good, it had the full feel that we don't hear with Prince as much because of 1 guitar, E Spalding did good on If I Was Your Girlfriend | |

I've always said this and I'm gon say it again. I HATE when other singers do a cover of "Purple Rain" That song is pure perfection and should only be performed by Mr. Nelson and NO OTHER!

Personally I'd be game for anything. I mean, on the surface I'd be highly suspect of any song because he's got such a unique stamp on the material. But a good song is a good song.
I could see another unique artist, like say Kate Bush, taking one of his tunes and turning into something completely new and special too.
But if I HAD to say one song alone that shouldn't be redone, I'd probably say Eye Know.
The spoken intro - his voice - the funky bass. That shouldn't be messed with by anyone.
Well maybe Justin Bieber could tear that shit up, but NO ONE else....
