Arrogance/The Flow, yay or nay?

Plenty of people really hate on these songs. Either the tunes are too short or they hate Tony M's bullshit rapping or they just hate the songs. I like them, I really do, they are nice little ditties--no masterworks, obviously, but they do have spice.

Arrogance is kind of original. Don't understand what 'pimp rag, tootsie pop and a cane' mean, but that's our Princey. The song is short but has a nice vibe.

The Flow has a great horn breakdown, beyond Tony's crap rappin, which, at this time, I started to get used to. lol

Overall, not bad, certainly not crap. I'm sure the rest of you will shit on them. Have at it..lol

Goobers..lol

I think they're both cool tracks. Tony M's rapping never bothered me at all. prince was one of Princes tightest albums from beginning to end.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Fenwick

I'll give it a yeah. Of all the albums in his entire catalog, I think the Symbol/Diamonds and Pearls have taken the largest tumble for me. I used to worship these albums, but they really don't do much for me anymore.

That being said, I am probably in the minority with you in thinking that these tracks are still good 20 years on.

No matter if people shit on these tracks, you like what you like 2freaky..

I'm not a big fan of either of them, but they are on the album and there is not a lot i can do about that.

Like Fenwick i used to really enjoy sillysymbol as an album, but i cannot remember the last time i played it all the way through. Some crazy tracks on there though, Arrogance included.

I like the bass on Arrogance a lot. It's a short little ditty in the middle of the album...serves a nice purpose and keeps things grooving while changing up the style of the album.

The F.L.O.W.--I used to love it. Now I'd only play it through the Prince part.

By the way, 2freaky, not sure what you mean about not getting the "pimp rag, tootsie pop, and a cane" reference. He's just referring to the outfit/attitude he was sporting at the time.

I like them on the album. I love the energy. The ending of the flow is pretty cool.

I love when Prince has this short songs which go from one to another...like the beginning of Parade.

Lie you say, no masterworks, but still cool

I hate Arrogance. The Flow is alright.

If they were both removed from the album, I wouldn't mind. In fact, it would probably improve my appreciation of the whole affair.

I am thankful they are there to break up some of the monotony. It borders on the edge of snoozey to go from "Sweet Baby" to the extended portion of "The Continental" to "Damn U". Imagine if "Damn U" went right into "7" which goes into "And God.."

That would be awful.

Spinlight makes some good points, but it could have made more sense to do a hard pop song similar to Let's Go Crazy or U Got The Look, which makes it obvious Prince was running out of ideas. The real problem is that stupid storyline in the lyrics. Fucked it all up.

But I still like the tracks.

I like em too. Always have. They are guiltless, fruity little Prince songs like he does like Tamborine and shit. Anyway yeah, I dig em and the storyline is lame.

I agree with the both of you.

Lyrics are often Prince's weak spot, but I guess one can be a masterful musician and composer without having anything interesting to say...

I don't hate Tony M at all, he did a refreshing job in the early-90's and "disappeared" (fired?) at the right time: he wasn't really needed in Come and/or TGE.

the org's vitriol against tony m usually comes from fams of the 01-03 era or hip/hop haters wink , or fams that cannot stand the fact that someone shared the vocal duties with Prince during a couple of years, even if that helped him to update his music (hopelessly dated with GB)...

let's ditch I Wanna Melt With U and The Max too while we're at it. nor would I miss 3 Chains O' Gold.

I WANNA MELT WITH U is the dance highlight of the whole "original NPG" era

The last time I listened to that entire album these two were the ones that I found myself enjoying the most along with "The Sacrifice of Victor".

It used to be one of my favourite albums by him, but my appreciation of it has diminished so much it's not even funny. Same goes for D&P. I can't even blame Tony M.'s presence for that either, the albums are just... not something the older version of me finds cool anymore.

I've actually decided that, as a whole, prince is a better version of D&P. The whole energy of the album is foreshadowed in Diamonds & Pearls but it's a lot more fun and less serious. "Gett Off" is still better than "The Continental" and "The Max" combined though.

time flies.
