Has Prince lost the ability to write catchy pop songs?

I just heard Hollywood Tonight from the new MJ album. As soon as I heard it I thought "man, why can't Prince write good funky pop songs like this anymore?"

Listen to songs like Love or Lolita or Chelsea Rodgers.... has the man forgotten how to write a hook??

Did MJ write "Hollywood Tonight"?

Is it more catchy than "Sticky Like Glue"?

"New Power slide...."

There are a few bootlegs with Prince "beatboxing," on certain songs, but since i know nothing of any of that hip hoppery hoopla, i could not say whether he is any good at it. To me it just makes him sound like a tit.

well for starters prince has written alot more songs then say MJ.

Secondly Sticky Like Glue is very catchy and i find it hard to understand why someone wouldnt enjoy it. I mean yeah , each to his own but its really catchy IMO.

Prince can beat box he have a lot of rhythm

he do it sometimes during acoustic performances

and he did it on record

Litttle Red Corvette Extended mix.

Hollywood Tonite is good until the chorus, chorus is very weak for Michael Jackson standards

and synth line is a direct nod to When Doves Cry

and no never in a million years is Hollywood Tonite more catchy then Sticky Like Glue.

Maybe Prince is not in his song writing zenith but from time to time

he give us some killer jams that are shoulder to

shoulder with his best work.

Sticky Like Glue is really really good Prince song

and don't tell me that rap part is cheesy because it is a nod to Sugar Hill Gang and i like it.

You don't understand.

Prince already wrote his hits 20-something years ago and he secured his place as a legend. When Michael wrote this song, almost everybody on the entire planet hated him. He had to save his career, and writing catchy pop songs would do exactly that. Prince has no reason too. He already did it with Purple Rain. Michael just wanted to show people that there was more to him than the freak show and that he still had it.

Nah not really. These HollyWood Tonight ppl are definitely not avid listeners of Prince. They only know what gets thrown in their faces to write about

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

I'm quite sure that if Prince "wanted" to write a little poppy kid top twenty radio playin' hit like he did in the eighties, he could. The fact of the matter is Prince is much deeper than that. The man can put up a hard core jam against the best... and leave 'em hangin' for more. "We" need him to write a catchy pop song so "we" can dance, dance, dance....

Some of us who appreciate the many stylings of this genius, like musicians and poets, can jam with anything he does now. He does not need to compete with and/or be chained with the definition of catchy, pop songs. That would be slavery to an artistic person. Besides... it is obvious since I've been in and out of this place, we all have different ideas of what music is cool or not. Multicolored funkster brother can do it all...

Let's talk about ability

Ability to compose a song

Prince records every rehearsal, every jam session and many of his best compositions or ideas come

from it.

Some of the songs are on albums but there are at least 1000 vault songs or never finished songs.

What i'm trying to say is that

he can easy go to his vault and get 12 best ideas and turn them into great songs

so

the answer is no.

He never lost the ability to make great pop songs it just he lost the ability to choose the right songs for the album.

Instead of relying on great old idea Prince more likely likes

to get the idea he have at the moment.

Most of his albums are composed of current stuff he works on.

but if he wants he can get some old vault idea and make a great song.

Of course Prince can write a catchy song. Unfortunately he belongs to an organization that frowns upon creativity and individulalism. sad

I don't know, probably, probably not.

If he has lost the ability to write as well as he used to, he already reinvented the wheel many times over.

I don't think it's a big deal if he's not as good a songwriter as he used to be.

He's 52 years old, and he pretty much put out an album a year since he was a teenager. Plus, he has thousands of unreleased songs.

I don't blame him if he's tapped out.

That just comes with age, IMO. A human being's mind isn't as sharp in their 50's as it was in their 20's and 30's.

Of course it sounds dated, Teddy Rilley produced it (Though I still love it).

Well, being that he writes one song a day, I wouldn't know. But from what he's been releasing, I'd venture to say, at the very least, he's been giving us songs that might be catchy but aren't terribly clever or rememberable. hmmm

To be honest with you, I think its about the same as it always was, a gift never leaves people.

Prince is his music and there is no doubt about it, I just think that with him, his music changes as well. I think that he still has the ability to write a catch pop song, I just think he is more focus on getting his message across. His music reflects him and since he is very open through his music, criticizing his lyrics now are like criticizing him personally. I do believe that being catchy is the last thing on his mind, but I think alot of his lyrics and songs are very catchy still. I don't think he lost the ability of anything, I just think some of his fans lost the ability to enjoy his art. In all honesty, we all have our own opinion's on his music.. and while some may think, its not how it use to be, others will think its much better now, so to each his own.

no

some people are just caught in the past,

while others, unfortunately, have been

accustomed to what contemporary radio plays...which we know is

not always the format Prince chooses.

but I think that those who appreciate his art, accept it as

a reflection of who he is,

and not necessarily as a effort in fitting into who ever's conception of pop

a lot of enjoying Prince's music is accepting him for who he is

cool

Not in my opinion; and Love, Lolita and Chelsea Rodgers are much better and catchier than Hollywood Tonight. I think Hollywood Tonight is a rather mediocre song.

MJ was actually my favorite artist when I was young, so I know what he's about, but when I discovered Prince I realized he's better.

I dont know because I dont think he really cares to write catchy pop songs now. His music has always had a pop appeal to it but with current methods of distribution and such I really dont think he cares if he has a hit or not. He promotes his new music just enough to let people know its out. I know its crazy but not everybody is into the internet so his few tv spots and magazine articles let fans know he has new material out. I think Compassion was pretty catchy but not good for top 40 radio.
