The week "Let's Go Crazy" went No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

1. Let's Go Crazy-Prince and The Revolution
2. Missing You-John Waite
3. Drive-The Cars
4. She Bop-Cyndi Lauper
5. I Just Called To Say I Love You-Stevie Wonder
6. What's Love Got To Do With It?-Tina Turner
7. The Warrior-Scandal featuring Patty Smyth
8. The Glamorous Life-Sheila E
9. Cruel Summer-Bananarama
10. Cover Me-Bruce Springsteen

week of July 7, 1984

I was at Billboard.com and was going through the chart archives and it's interesting to see what songs were in the top 10 and how well they performed in relation to Prince's hits. I still can't believe how bad ass this song is and how awful "I Just Called To Say I Love You" is.

who would imagine that Stevie Wonder would be the weakest link in a Top 10 of any week?

Oh & did u notice another Prince-related song simultaneously in the Top 10. Sheila E's Glamorous Life!!!biggrin

Also on a side note, WDC was still going strong in the Top 20 at the time.

The Glamorous Life is a great track, that was a well deserved hit.

Smittyrock70 that's a great point. Chart archives usually show the top ten songs for that week, but "When Doves Cry" was still getting heavy airplay at this time. Most of the songs in the top ten is proof enough to understand why crossing over for Prince was so important. Also, the artists that were in the top this week are BIG: Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder and Sheila E.

also,it's worth noting that the B-side to "Let's Go Crazy"----the raunchy "Erotic City"----was also getting tremendous radio airplay at the time,so this was basically a 2-sided hit single for Prince.

Good point! "Let's Go Crazy" was really a pop and rock hit and "Erotic City" was playing at every hip-hop club and urban station. "Let's Go Crazy" did a lot for Prince's career.

So true. When LGC and EC came out, radio and clubs couldn't help buy play the songs. He was a "funk god" and "rock god" on the same single.

And all this was before the movie even came out which helped to really sell out the movie at the movie theaters. I think....or was the movie released in June? I just know you couldn't even get into a movie theater the first few weeks it was released unless you went to an afternoon matinee.

The movie premiered in L.A on 26th July '84 and went on general release the day after.

I kinda remember it being the same in 85 with "Raspberry Beret".

The pop stations played "Raspberry Beret" but I never heard it on the soul stations.

They bumped "She's Always in my Hair".

But "Let's Go Crazy/Erotic City" was much bigger.

Has anybody heard the other songs that were in the top ten when "LGC" went number one on the Hot 100? What's everybody's thoughts about the rest of the songs here?

Virtually all those songs are great and it's amazing how big/popular most of those artists were at the time (except for Sheila E. I guess... being the least known). It's like a classic slice of the 80's.

My favorite song on the list has to be Missing You.
