Prince's most PERFECT song is...

Little Red Corvette

LRC isn't my favorite Prince song, but everything about it is perfect. It's sheer genious.

It's hip. It's edgy. It's sexuality. It's sensuality. It's the epitome of rock n' roll.

He lures us in with a hint of mystery, and then rocks the fuck out of us.

The metaphor itsself of comparing her to a sleek and sexy car, is magnificent, and the song takes us on a tale of lust... and surprisingly enough... guidance. (Baby you're much too fast... and "Honey, you got to slow down".)

The LP version with the break... "Girl, you got an ass like I never dreamed. And the ride is so sweet, you must be a limousine" ... is AMAZING!

The hook... the delivery... the classic Minneapolis sound... and the fact that the song matures right along with us as we've matured and realize in our adulthood that he wasn't singing about a Chevrolet, is a stroke of brilliance.

Even his sinister method of fixing her... "Gimme the keys, I'm gonna try to tame your little red love machine." ... and "Girl, you got ass like I never dreamed... and the ride is so sweet, you must be a limousine" ... It's as though he's captivated... sucked in... and can't control himself because it's SO good... even after he tried to tame her!

So he's torn... because he appears to understand how "good" her poo-nanny is, and needs to share that fact with ALL of us... but he still insists that she slows down!

AMAZING SONG!! Simply PERFECT in every which way!!!!!!!!!!!

And one more thing... yes... he said "you must be a limousine". That's like... the sweetest of fine rides. The creme-de-la-creme. To tell a woman that she "must be a LIMOUSINE", after ALREADY comparing her to a beautiful classic fine-as-heck ride... which at the time... and maybe still is... the finest of American sports cars... is just creatively OVER THE TOP!!

And what? he was 23 in 1981 when it was most likely written?? Unbelievable.

The song has also stood the test of time as a "pop/rock" icon. It's eternal!

If you have a song that you consider more perfect than this... please... by all means... argue your point!

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

-It has an addicting chorus

-The music alone without the lyrics just sounds cool enough

Sign O' The Times

  • Minimalism. There isn't a tone too much, but there isn't a tone missing either. I once heard someone say that a song isn't finished as long as you can take away unimportant sounds, and I agree with him. Sign O' The Times is the ultimate example.
  • A great drum track. I've never heard something like it, it's catchy and it's basically what defines the song. Replace it and the magic is gone.
  • The lyrics carry an important message, brought in clear language instead of forced poetry. It's also one of Prince's few political songs, and I'd say it's his best.
  • One of the most risky choices for a single of all time, yet commercially very successful.
  • One of the best, if not the best music video Prince has ever released. It's intended to make you listen to the lyrics and that's what it does. Once again, minimalism. Nothing is too much, it does what it has to do and nothing more.

This track is sheer genius to me, and the best opener to the Sign O' The Times album I can imagine. It basically sums the album up musically and the album would be a lot less without this track (I'd still love it though).

You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Do Me Baby.....

The energy in this field's been known to flicker lights, aight

Asong with no name, acapella moans and a bridge of silence

Undeterred nevertheless a masterpiece on butterscotch thighs

Turn off the lights, turn off the lights

It's time for Mr Go

I couldn't agree more. All your points are valid. Everything about it is just perfect!

I'd also say that Kiss falls into the Perfection category, I can't think of anything i'd add or take from it...

It's honestly really tough to label one as my fav but even before I opened this and saw that you picked Little Red Corvette I thought the same! smile I never grow tired of it, I wrote a paper on it, and it was only made more special for me when he played it live for like 12 minutes last week.

I must admit, LRC is a perfect song! I love it!! But there are others that really fit that bill too.... Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, The Beautiful Ones, Kiss, Electric Intercourse,The Question of You, Shhh, Scandalous, Insatiable, Pink Cashmere, Call My Name, Adore, TMBGITW, Thieves in the Temple, Blue Light, Somebody's Somebody, Eye Hate U, and plenty more. Prince has SOOOOO many perfect songs I am amazed just thinking about them!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

I gotta roll with Erotic City. Bassline is on point, the drum beat is tight. Best lyric: Every time I comb my hair, xoughts of you get in my eyes. It's sexy. Plus after my parents destroyed the 12", I was a Prince fam for life.
