confessions of a closet orger From time to time I look at the org from my desk at work but find myself minimizing the screen if somebody happens to be near my desk in case they see what I'm doing. Now, at 40 am I embarrassed that I'm looking at a music fan website or the fact that it's a Prince website? I'm not knocking the org but I'm a bit ashamed of myself for not sticking by my guns and saying to hell with what people think but all the same, I just don't need the jokes that my colleagues would make if they found out. To me, my interest in Prince's music is very personal. Does anybody else hide their love for Prince's music?

There's no need to hide your 'love' for Prince & his music, everyone has their differences & if Prince is one of yours music-wise, why hide it? It's exactly like one of your work mates having an obsession with GaGa - they're both music artists. Everyone isn't going to appreciate your differences, it's a part of life.
Just get over it, there's nothing to be ashamed about.

No. I'll discuss Prince (and/or my other favorite artists) at any opportune time. I know the Geeksquad techs that installed my new home theater system will never forget me!

I totally emapthise with you.
I was like that with MJ + Prince. However, at the end of the day people will remember you for liking someone that's "different". What I love about being a FAN of them both is that people come to me about questions/facts and they are really interested in both but reluctant to be fans themselves.

No, I love Prince and make sure everyone knows it. I totally flame my love for him. No problem with it. But I guess guys/grown men do have issues with it. But guess what? I know more male Prince fans than I do female fans. It's weird, but I guess.
Well this is ur oasis, like a couple of other places to express ur love for Prince. Have a personal computer at home? Use it to ur advantage if ur too shy at work, unless u have a busy familly-life to deal with. but nevertheless, this is a message board 4 u to talk. And don't mind the trash-talkers on here, it comes with the package.
Enjoy! Ur 40 now, time to start livin' it up with Prince musique on ur side! Go to the Jan 18th NY show for goodness sake! Matter of fact, get 1999 and listen to DMSR! That'll get u hype to the beat Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

I had a lot of MJ memorabilia before he died & my classmates a few years ago were like "MJ GROSS" So i would always hide my posters when my friends would come over because I thought they wouldn't like me thinking he was cool. Now they like him for obvious reasons, but I learned my lesson. My taste in music is part of who I am and I'm not gonna fake it to like some mainstream artist that I don't even want to like just to please some friends.

Why would you feel ashamed 2 be a fan of Prince?
I mean i know he has done some weird shit over the years but i have never wavered in my
love & adulation 4 him & none of my friends or family are in2 him( except 4 my org buddies!).
I listen 2 their jokes - eg: Why don't u go & steal Prince & have him as a garden gnome? or
Prince would make a really good water bottle if your electric blanket fails!! HAHAFunny HA HA!!! is my reply 2 them!!!
Be proud 2 love Prince & share your thoughts of him, I love showing people my Prince stuff & am especially proud of my bedroom which is my own personal "Prince sanctuary"!!!
PEACE & BE WILD!!!!! EVEN AT 40!!!! I KNOW I WILL BE!!!!
AND IM ONLY 3 YEARS YOUNGER THAN U!!! [Edited 12/24/10 23:05pm] [Edited 1/10/11 15:28pm] Prince once tried 2 change his name 2 a symbol so that ur'e mother couldn't find him in the phonebook!

Thanks for your support guys. I suppose the issue's not with Prince but that logging on to a fan website at all at 40 seems...well ...kind of sad - something a teenager might do in my mind and as though I haven't grown up. Perhaps it's me going through some mid-life crisis - I don't know. Anyway, if people have stupid preconceptions about Prince without knowing the full range of his music, so be it.
I'm the sort of person who gets annoyed when I see Prince documentaries/clips where they always show the same old clips of him playing 'the hits' (e.g. Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Get off...) without showing his more serious, experimental side. Then, just maybe, others would see his true musicianship (BBC Omnibus wasn't bad, though). I'd like people to see my own edit in which Prince doesn't conform to stereotype but as others have mentioned here you can't make people like Prince.

lol oooohhhhh nooooo, there are older purple heads on this forum and the next, believe me. And they're hardcore. Ur pretty much a kid when it comes to them. Don't be ashamed cuz of ur age (ur making them look bad...)
Most of the real serious Prince fans are over 30 anyway cu they actually have the experience of growing up with him and his music. Dont ever be ashamed Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

Maybe you're just sensitive, worried people will ridicule you for liking Prince. I wouldn't/don't care one little bit. I actually like people knowing I think Prince is a don. Why be ashamed of liking an artist and their music!? Especially when said artist is a genuis!

I'm the total opposite bigbrother. At one of my old jobs is where I found out about Prince and became a Hardcore enthusiast. I had an old co-worker who I had the hugest crush on and she was listening to P* Control and I thought, if I want to get to know more about her, I need to understand what she likes and not likes. Well, needless to say that relationship never started. It was back in Nov. 1996 and Emancipation had just dropped that week, I think. I used to be a Hardcore B*Boy and was a East Coast NYC Hip Hop Head. Since then I have not 'hid' my love of P's music. I find it a trip that you're in your 40's like me and you give a damn what someone else thinks of you. I have a small circle of friends, if they're friends at all and we all love Prince and we throw house parties that are Prince themed, so none of us are embarrassed about that ... LoL Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I get it. You're not ashamed of Prince, you're ashamed of going to a forum/website devoted to a singer...at forty!
I'm going to tell you the truth: a 25+ year old person going to websites/foruns related to a music artist is not what I would call acceptable behaviour emotionally.
But if that gives you a much needed distraction then continue doing so, but don't expect people not to give you a side-eye; you're a full grown man doing what the average 17-18 year old would. [Edited 12/27/10 13:07pm]

What makes you think that you have the right to make that judgment? It's a simple website, it's not like he's admitting to murder. Being a fan of Prince and choosing to go on a mere forum during free time is perfectly acceptable, at whatever age. How old are you anyways? Are you going to stop going on here after you turn twenty five?
And together we'll stare into silence.

Coming here ain't no different than going 2 sports team fansites, I do both and there's nothin 2B ashamed. It's a way 4 folks 2 share common interests, what's wrong with that?
Now if U were 40 and going 2 Justin Bieber's website, THEN u would deserve 2B ridiculed. "Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."

What complete and utter bullshit. People of ALL ages go to fansites for all sorts of topics, music-related ones included.
You seem to have a very narrow, ageist perspective that bears little resemblance to reality.

It sounds like the beginning of a mid-life crisis. I've had one and still not over it yet. There's nothing wrong with being on a forum. Before this one I was on a few others where the subject interested me. Religion, sport, literature, philosophy. Music is also an interest and forums shouldn't have age restrictions. I can't surf at work but at home in private time, why not?
Somehow when we reach our 40s we think that our lives are partially over. That we can't dance anymore, do this or that coz we're getting older. And then sometimes life arrives with a terminal illness for one of your good friends and you realise how fragile everything is.
If your Last December came, what would do. I sure hope that your last months would have been filled with joy, hope and happiness and not worries, despair and shame. I'm just a couple of years younger than you and I do not feel it's weird to be on a forum. I can understand having to be discrete at work though. I used to hide my love for certain musicians when I was younger because I didn't want to be made fun of. After living life, I've learned life is simply too short to not enjoy simple pleasures like music. I don't hide it. I find it an opportunity to connect with other people who enjoy the same music as I do. Not too many people I know are Prince fans so it's nice to have that connection with others. He has an amazing body of work and I've discovered new tidbids because of the people on the org

I agree. Being a fan of a musician and wanting to share the interest with other fans on a board like this has nothing to do with age. I am 44 and yes, I am sitting in the office and looking at the forum right now. I am proud to be a fan of this legendary artist named Prince and everyone can know about it!!
At my age, being a fan of a teenager like Justin Bieber would be a bit strange maybe, and I think I would not talk about that too openly. But even that is okay - if older people like the music of those youngsters, why not?! [Edited 12/28/10 7:42am]

What's the difference with a sports fan watching the 'Sky Sports' channel all day? Looking for news on their favourite team, players etc..

Do what makes you comfortable, period! It's my opinion that judgements of your choice of music, message board usage, or openness regarding either of those things are nobody elses business. If you love the Wee Purple Man and choose to keep it to yourself, awesome. But if you shared it you might find that more people feel the same. And if they don't, screw 'em!
As far as getting older and wondering if you should still be participating in internet forums at all goes, I can totally relate. I've actually had those same thoughts a few times in the last year. I'm still not sure.
